2014 SPEED TO SAFETY TRAINING AND QUALIFIERS
What is Speed to Safety about?
Speed to Safety is an event that helps teach Pony Club riders the skill needed to ride at a given
pace over a given distance. This skill is important for cross country riding and show jumping it can
also equip riders to be employed as track riders and Jockeys.
NZ is holding three training/qualifiers: These training days will enable riders to represent the NZ at
the State Final held at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Saturday 23rd August, 2014.
Riders that are graded 1, 2, 3 or 4 for horse trials are invited to attend the training days for a
chance to represent NZ at the State Final. Riders from other zones are welcome to attend; their
times will be forwarded to their respective zones.

Event Dates: Sunday May 4th, Saturday June 7th and Sunday July 13th. Time: 10am.
Eligibility: Riders must be graded for cross country (Horse trials) from Grade 4 to 1.
Training venue: Tocumwal Race Course enter via horse float car park via Honniball Drive, Tocumwal
Riders to assemble in the horse stripping stalls (so bring extra tie-ups)
State Final: Sat 23rd August – Moonee Valley Racecourse.

Zone Event - Guidelines
Selection of the Speed to Safety zone finalists will take place at Zone training and qualifiers,
Grades 1 & 2, combined together and Grades 3 & 4 combined Zone riders who have fulfilled the
training criteria, will represent the zone at the Final as 1st representative or as 1st reserve.
Conditions will be similar to the final Speed to Safety event in that the given speed will be set at
550 meters per minute for Grades 1 and 2 and 500 meters per minute for Grades 3 and 4, over a
distance of 1000m.
 Riders must attend a minimum of 2 qualifiers in order to qualify the final.
 There will be one training run at each qualifier before riders are officially timed.
 Riders are timed over 1000m and are expected to ride the optimum times of:
o Grade 1 & 2 – 109 seconds over 1000m (550m per minute) = 21.8s per 200m
o Grade 3 & 4 - 120 seconds over 1000m (500m per minute) = 24s per 200m
o Riders closest to the optimum time will be selected for the finals; the next closest will
be the reserve rider.
Conditions of entry:
Gear Required: Approved ASA helmet, riding boots, back protector, medical armband, XC uniform, a
Track/jumping or all-purpose saddle. No horse bandages.
Eventing Watches may be used for training but will not be allowed for the Final. Track beepers are allowed.
Please bring your attendance card to check your HT grading. A rider who enters at grade 3 & 4 must stay in
that section for the duration of the series.
Horses must be fit enough to cope with 5000m ridden work on the day.
Riders who are 14 years or over must have their C Certificate prior to the commencement of the series.
• Compulsory gear check will be carried out.
• No Lungeing allowed. Horses to be 4 years and over. No Stallions or Rigs.
• Dogs are not permitted, Those who disregard this rule will not be permitted to ride.
• Neither the organising committee of this competition nor the PCAV accepts any responsibility for any
accident, damage, injury or illness to horses, riders, ground spectators or any other person or property.
• Queries, protests, horse abuse rules as per the PCAV Handbook of By-Laws.
• Speed to safety entry form-return by closing date. No late entries accepted.
Maximum of 20 competitors at each training/qualifier, with the option to change.

I understand in the event of this rider requiring urgent medical attention, every effort will be made to inform
me first however if I cannot be informed, I hereby authorize the organizers to obtain such treatment
(including blood transfusions and/or anaesthetics) as is considered necessary at the time. I also authorize
the organizers to seek assistance for the rider’s horse in the case of an emergency. I also undertake to
reimburse the organizers for any costs incurred.
