The National Academic Advising Association achieved tremendous success in 2013, the association’s 34th year. President Joshua Smith presided over a year of successful programs and resources for members and the field of academic advising to enhance student success. NACADA continues to be financially secure while striving to hold down the cost of membership, resources, and registration fees. Membership continues to grow. MEMBER SERVICES: REGIONAL CONFERENCES – The NACADA Regional Conferences continue to offer vital professional development opportunities to the members. The 2013 Regional Conferences hosted a near record 3,330 participants. In addition, many states, allied and institutional member associations hosted NACADA Drive-In Conferences to expand the NACADA reach locally. RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM – Held in conjunction with the Region 2 Conference in Newark, NJ with 15 participants in attendance. MEMBER PUBLICATIONS – Twenty-six members serve on the NACADA Journal Editorial Board and reviewed submitted manuscripts. Articles by 36 authors were published in the Journal; an additional 77 members authored book reviews. NACADA published two books – Peer Advising and Mentoring 2nd edition with 36 authors, and NACADA/Jossey-Bass Academic Advising Approaches: Strategies that teach students to make the most of college with 24 authors. The electronic quarterly Academic Advising Today published articles by more than 52 authors this year. Three Pocket Guides were published featuring 12 authors. The monthly “NACADA HIGHLIGHTS” covers the Association news. ACADEMIC ADVISING SUMMER INSTITUTE – Another 343 participants intensely studied the foundations of academic advising and developed a plan to effect change on their campuses during the two, week-long Institutes in Jacksonville, FL and Scottsdale, AZ. Of the participants, 132 indicated they were first-time attendees at a NACADA event. Combined efforts in Jacksonville, FL with the NACADA/NCAA one-day seminar provided the opportunity to attend the NCAA event and stay for the Institute. We plan to continue this practice in the future for one of the two Institutes annually. ACADEMIC ADVISING ADMINISTRATORS’ INSTITUTE – T he 11th annual Advising Administrators’ Institute was a huge success with 144 participants meeting in Savannah, GA. The Institute continues to incorporate a leadership component. ASSESSMENT OF ACADEMIC ADVISING INSTITUTE – The Assessment Institute drew 154 participants to Savannah, GA in February for another successful event. NATIONAL SEMINAR – The eighth National Seminar had a narrower focus than in the past (Adult Learners) and drew 81 participants. The Seminar was held between the two winter Institutes, allowing participants from both Institutes to extend their time at the meeting so they could participate in the Seminar. ANNUAL CONFERENCE – The 2013 Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, UT is on target to register over 2,700 participants with 315 concurrent sessions, 21 preconference workshops and 42 poster sessions planned. The 2012 Annual Conference in Nashville, TN drew 2,930 attendees. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE – The NACADA International Conference was held June 5-7 at the University College Maastricht in Maastricht, Netherlands with 237 participants from 18 countries in attendance. The conference was a huge success; 98% of survey participants said they would attend another NACADA International Conference if given the opportunity. EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM – Ten members of the 2011-2013 Class of Emerging Leaders receive their Certificates of Completion this year, bringing the total completing the program to 45. Three Emerging Leaders have moved on to become Mentors for the program. A joint Publications Advisory Board/1st Year Commission review of the NACADA/FYE book Academic Advising: New Insights for Teaching and Learning was recently sent to FYE for consideration. Three editors have completed an outline for a re-purposed (2016) edition of Academic Advising: A Comprehensive Handbook as the third leg of the Advisor Core Resource Library that includes the Guidebook (informational component of advising), the Approaches book (relational), and the repurposed Handbook as the conceptual piece. Fourteen NACADA members made up the CAS Standards Expert Review Panel who completed their work with the CAS Academic Advising Program (AAP) revision committee this summer.
