Academic Advisor
Purpose
Purpose:
To provide timely and accurate advising for the Department of Linguistics and TESOL students
to ensure their successful and timely completion. To assist with the recruitment of students for
the new BA degree in Linguistics.
Essential Functions
Function 1:
Advise current and prospective students on course and program requirements for degree and
certificate programs.
20 % Time
Function 2:
Update program information and handle related advising tasks in MyMav.
20 % Time
Function 3:
Maintain and update accurate advising and admissions records for the department.
15 % Time
Function 4:
Attend recruitment fairs and advisors meetings.
5 % Time
Function 5:
Handle advising related inquiries and clerical duties.
15 % Time
Function 6:
Handle advising holds, prerequisites, drop/withdraw/add and related section paperwork for
students and the department.
15 % Time
Function 7:
Advise BA students who are on probation regarding grade exclusions and course selection.
10 % Time

Marginal/Incidental Functions:
Other functions as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and 1 to 4 years experience in a related field (working with college-level
and/or high school students or related experience). Applicants must include in their online
resume the following information: 1) Employment history: name of company, period employed
(from month/year to month/year), job title, summary of job duties and 2)Education: if some
college or college degree, list school name, degree type, major, graduated or not, and hours
completed if not graduated.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree. 2 years experience in academic advising and/or related field. Excellent
communication skills. Strong computer skills, including but not limited to MS Office. Degree in
Linguistics or a foreign language. Experience working with MyMav (PeopleSoft).
