UPDATE: November 8, 8:25 AM CST
We want to express again our sadness about the loss of Jack the cat
this past weekend. The search, recovery and fight for Jack's life
touched many at American Airlines and in this community. For those of
us who are pet owners, we know Ms. Pascoe's decision was a difficult
one, and our family at American sends heartfelt sympathies to Karen
and to all in this community who have been moved by Jack's story.
We know the outpouring of emotion will continue, so we are dedicating
this Notes page for comments of sympathy and encouragement. Please
continue showing your support for Karen and Jack on this dedicated
page.
Tomorrow we will return our main Wall to the general travel
conversation, and we ask that all Jack-related conversation please
move to this dedicated Notes page for future dialogue. Any comments
not made to this dedicated Note page (below this Note) will be hidden or
removed.
In the meantime, thanks to those of you showing your support and
compassion.

Unfortunately, Jack the cat had to be euthanized by the veterinarian
today. We are deeply saddened that Jack the cat has passed away, and
we offer profound sympathy to Jack’s owner, Karen Pascoe, for her
loss. Our heart also goes out to the Friends of Jack and those in the
cat-loving community who have grown fond of Jack since he went
missing. We understand that a cat is a beloved family member for so
many, including our own employees.
From all of us at American, our sincere apologies to Karen and Jack’s
family and friends. We also thank all of you who have provided support,
ideas, kindness and understanding for Jack along the way.
Friday, October 28
In an effort to get Karen to Jack as soon as possible, we are flying her
to JFK this evening for what we’re sure will be a much-needed reunion
for both of them. Additionally, we have assumed responsibility for
covering Jack’s veterinary and medical expenses, and have done so
since his reappearance. Jack’s condition remains closely watched by
his veterinarian, and we will do our best to provide updates as soon as
we learn more. To everyone following this story, we share your concern
and hope, and we ask that you please continue sending your positive
thoughts and prayers to Jack and Karen.
Wednesday, October 26
As Jack has been on his own for two months, we have now learned that
he will need to remain in the care of a veterinarian for an additional
period. Ms. Pascoe has been advised of these developments, and Jack
will not be able to travel at this time due to the care and treatment he is
receiving.
Tuesday, October 25
American Airlines is happy to announce that Jack the Cat has been
found at JFK airport. American's team of airport employees have been
focused on the search effort since Jack escaped on August 25, 2011.
Jack was found in the customs room and was immediately taken by
team members to a local veterinarian.
American's priority was advising Jack's owner, Ms Pascoe, which
occurred immediately after he was identified. Now we are also happy to
advise all other Friends of Jack of this news. American plans to fly Jack
to California to be reunited with Ms Pascoe.
The ongoing search efforts to locate Jack have included many
employees at the airport who have remained vigilant in their search and
committed to finding Jack. We thank the Friends of Jack for their
ongoing search efforts outside the JFK perimeter and share everyone's
relief that he has been found.

UPDATE on AA's search for Jack the Cat - September
9, 1:42 PM EST
Since our last update this past Friday, our employees have continued
the search for Jack at JFK over the weekend and into this week. We
are all concerned with Jack’s well-being and our employees have been
doing everything they can to locate him. This past weekend we also
issued a pet Amber alert that we hope furthers awareness about Jack.
This broadens our search beyond the airport grounds in the event he
has made his way into the community surrounding the airport.
We continue to place food and water around the airport and monitor for
signs of Jack. We have posters in employee break rooms and on
bulletin boards and throughout the JFK facility. We have alerted all
airlines at JFK of our search and have flyers with Jack’s photo and our
request for help should they see him. Have-a-Heart Humane traps are
set around the airport where our pet detective indicated Jack’s scent
was present and they are being checked regularly. While we regret the
initial impact to our efforts that were caused by the closure of JFK due
to Hurricane Irene, our search effort and communication with Jack’s
owner, Ms. Pascoe, has been extensive.
While our employees continue to their search for Jack, at this point we
feel we have exhausted most of our options to continue expanding the
search for Jack beyond our prior and ongoing efforts. Our efforts will
obviously continue, and we will provide updates when we have any new
developments to share. We plan to continue our dialogue with Jack’s
owner and discuss with her any next steps.
As many of you have asked how this happened, we continue our
internal investigation as to how Jack escaped. Once we fully
understand what happened, we will do everything possible to learn from
this situation going forward in an attempt to prevent it from happening
again. For so many of us at American Airlines, our pets are very much
our family members, too.
As we know the dialogue will continue on Jack, we are dedicating this
Note page update as the appropriate forum for discussion, where we
welcome all comments and conversation about Jack. Beginning
Monday, September 12, in an effort to allow space for more general
travel conversation to continue on our main Wall page, and on other
customer posts, any comments related to the search for Jack should be
made to Jack’s dedicated Note page (below this note). We will delete
any comments about Jack that are not made to this dedicated Jack’s
page.
If we are able to find Jack and reunite him with Ms. Pascoe, this
community will be the second to know after Ms. Pascoe. We hope as
much as you do that Jack is discovered safe and sound so we can get
him home.

the process of issuing a Pet Amber Alert that will further broaden
the search beyond the airport into the surrounding community.
Based on feedback from the tracker, we remain hopeful that Jack might
be found and we are incorporating her suggestions. Today’s
