Graduate Assistantship – Mental Health Outreach
The University Counseling Center is dedicated to promoting psychological wellbeing that enriches personal and
academic growth. The Counseling Center provides individual and group psychotherapy, referral services,
consultations and psycho-educational programs. The staff consists of psychologists and social workers as well as
clinical interns who serve students year round.
The graduate assistant works to support the University Counseling Center’s goal to meet the goals of increasing
awareness and decreasing stigma of mental health issues and promoting prevention efforts through outreach
initiatives.
Description of Duties:
 Co-supervise 8 – 12 Mental Health Outreach Peer Educators (M-HOPE)
 Support the M-HOPE Internship Lead Instructor in curriculum development, classroom management,
lectures, grading, and supervising intern office hours
 Develop and implement new initiatives that are based in mental health and wellness outreach
 Foster relationships with campus partners for program and event collaboration
 Assist in the coordination and implementation of Fall 2016 intern recruitment including, but not limited to,
obtaining an applicant pool, conducting interviews, and making intern selections
 Further develop suicide prevention programming
 Assist in maintaining social media pages and university webpage
 Coordinator with other Health Service-based internship supervisors to develop a semester Intern Meet &
Greet
 Manage the Mental Health Outreach account and respond to outreach requests in a timely and professional
manner
 Maintain an organized office space conducive to student learning and productivity by managing some
administrative tasks as determined between successful applicant and supervisor
Minimum Qualifications:
 Must be accepted into a Binghamton University graduate program for the 2015-2016 academic year
 Bachelor’s degree required
 Successful candidates should possess:
o Good time management skills
o Strong public speaking experience
o Excellent interpersonal skills
o Cultural competency with diverse populations
o Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
o Ability to work well in groups and individually
o Adaptability and a willingness to help build new initiatives
o Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
 Some night and weekend commitments are expected (advance notice will be given.)
Preferred Qualifications:
 Educational background in counseling, social work, psychology, human development, sociology, or education
 Experience in one or more of the following highly desired: non-profit, education/teaching, working with
young adult populations, mental health field, or in higher education
 Leadership or teaching experience
 Social media and visual marketing experience a plus
Compensation:
This assistantship includes a base stipend for the academic year of $9,400, paid biweekly. This position is represented
by the Graduate Student Employees Union (GSEU) and the stipend includes all potential union- negotiated raises
applicable for the academic year. Twenty hours of work per week is expected. This position requires some night and
weekend hours. Graduate assistant may be required to work some or all of the winter break – this will be decided
between supervisor and graduate assistant based on needs. Tuition scholarships may be available.
