South Sound High School is an alternative/choice high school. Our childcare center is licensed by the
Washington State Department of Early Learning. The center is staffed by one office professional
(Center), para educator/assistant, teen parents, and other students who are enrolled in the Childcare
Course to earn a C.T.E. credit toward graduation. Our Childcare Center is also supported by the
Superintendent of Public Instruction’s (OSPI) Community Food and Nutrition Program.
This is a standard position description to be used for positions with similar duties,
responsibilities, classification and compensation. Employees assigned to the position description
may or may not perform all of the essential functions indicated in this position description.
This job description does not constitute an employment agreement between the employer and
employee and is subject to change by the employer as the needs of the employer and
requirements of the job change.
Part I: Position Summary:
Assist the Childcare Center Office Professional in the operation of the state licensed childcare center.
The center serves as a classroom for pregnant teens, teens, teen parents, and the general school
population. Our goal is to establish age appropriate positive and nurturing environment to help babies
and toddlers grow physically, socially, mentally, and emotionally. Parents are served by other students.
The childcare center’s staff also assists teen parents exploring additional community resources to
strengthen their parenting skills and assist them toward graduation.
Part II: Supervision and Controls over the Work:
Works under the supervision of the Childcare Center Office Professional or the Principal. Work is
controlled and/or guided by state statute and state administrative code, professional practice, school and
district policies, collective bargaining agreement, and procedures and directions and expectations as
established by the director and the administrator.
Part III: Major Duties and Responsibilities (depending on specific assignment, duties and
responsibilities listed may include, but are not limited to the following):

Organize, direct, and supervise teenage childcare providers so that we may provide childcare for
teen student’s infants and toddlers.
Model positive practices in child rearing techniques to teens and teen parents.
Directly care for infants and toddlers.
Prepare meals and bottles for infants and children.
Supervise teen led developmentally appropriate art, science, math, communication, music, and
recreational activities for infants and toddlers.
Track student attendance.
Train students in educational appropriate materials for infants and toddlers
Evaluate teen workers on job performance.
Model and provide child development educational resources to teen parents on positive parenting
practices.
Work collaboratively with teachers, students, parents, and other staff members to implement
independent educational programs and behavior contracts for students.
Communicate with respect and confidentiality. Communicate regularly with Childcare Office
Professional. Under the direction of the office professional (Center), communicate with teen
parents, the student’s parents, and teen workers, and other staff in the pursuit of common goals
and problem solving.
Perform office duties, as pertained to identify students, such a filing, medical records, classroom
issues, interaction with families and the public.
Keep safety issues a high priority. Report unusual behaviors or signs of abuse to office
professional (Center) and Principal.
Remain patient and flexible in adapting to multiple requests. Must respond to situations as they
occur and use multiple sets of skills when dealing with different situations.
Consistently follow behavior/classroom management system as developed by the office
professional (Center) and Principal.
Required to follow Board policies and stay abreast of updates and changes.
Performs other duties as assigned by administrator and/or designee.
Part IV: Minimum Qualifications:










High School diploma or equivalent AND
An Associate’s (or higher) degree; or successful completion of the Educational Testing Service
(ETS) Exam.
Knowledge of general classroom procedures.
Knowledge of working with infants, toddlers, and teens.
Familiarity with a variety of disabilities (learning, medical).
Required to obtain 20 hours of STARS basic training within first 90 days of employment
Acquire 10 hours of STARS child care training each year.
Ability to work with infant’s age four weeks to three years. Model care giving skills in feeding,
diapering, teaching language skills, large and small motor skills, positive discipline, and play.
Assist teen mothers in taking care of the needs of their child.
Ability to organize and set priorities.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to remain flexible and work effectively under pressures.
Ability to maintain confidential information.
Ability to interact with students in a warm and confident manner.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the general public.
Certified in First Aid/CPR and possess a valid Food Handlers Permit.
Must be able to pass a Washington State/FBI background investigation.
Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
Part V: Desired Qualifications:


Prefer two years of experience in a classroom environment involving daily interaction with
students, children, and the public. School district experience preferred. Training in education or
teaching experience may substitute on a month-to-month basis for one year of experience.
Bilingual skills.

Work in a classroom/childcare environment; frequent interruptions; may sit or stand for longer than 2
hours at a time, may lift objects/infants/ toddlers repetitively; may be exposed to students with infectious
diseases; may be required to travel on field trips or to the grocery store for childcare supplies; may be
exposed to high noise levels from children and student activity; may deal with upset parents, students, or
community members. Daily, the employee is required to work in outside weather conditions.
The employee must lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds, and may assist, move, or restrain students
with greater weight when required to intervene in student safety issues.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, lift, carry,
move about, hear and speak.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral
vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. May be required to perform extensive work at a
computer display terminal.
While performing the duties of this job,. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid
conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee may be exposed to
infectious disease as carried by students, exposed to student noise and learning resource noise levels.
The employee may be required to travel in school owned or lease vehicles while supervising and assisting
students.
