YOUTH CONCERTO COMPETITION
The Eastern Wind Ensemble, comprised of dedicated musicians of professional caliber, is proud to announce
the 1st Annual Youth Concerto Competition, designed to feature an outstanding young musician in
performance with the Eastern Wind Ensemble. Talented brass, woodwind, percussion, voice and piano soloists
age 17 and younger are invited to perform an audition of their own solo repertoire selection. The winner will be
invited to perform in a concert with the Eastern Wind Ensemble during the 2012-2013 concert season.
RULES & ELIGIBILITY
Performers will audition (with piano accompanist) for the Eastern Wind Ensemble Youth Concerto Competition judges and
a live audience. All candidates will receive detailed feedback on their presentation, to help improve future live audition
experiences. Out-of-town candidates who cannot make the live audition may be permitted to submit a high-quality
recorded audition (CD, mini-disc, or high-quality MP3 or iTunes file) that contains approximately 10 -15 minutes of music
with piano accompaniment. This can be either an entire piece, or a selected movement or movements of a major work.
Along with an audition, applicants are required to submit a letter of reference from their music teacher and complete the
attached application form. The winner will be announced immediately following the audition concert and the winner will be
required to attend Monday evening rehearsals as needed in preparation for the concert, which will be programmed as part
of the Eastern Wind Ensemble’s regular concert series on a mutually convenient date.
This competition is open to any woodwind, brass, percussion, voice or piano player who is age 17 or younger as of
December 31, 2011. For candidates who can attend the live audition, to be held on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 7:00 pm,
please submit your application form by January 31, 2012 with a reference letter from your music teacher (or teachers)
which describes your musical skills and abilities. There is a $20 application fee and this should be submitted, by cheque
or money order, with the application package. Audition repertoire is the decision of the player, however each player will
have a maximum of 10 minutes.
If you are unable to attend the live audition, recorded applications may be submitted instead. Generally speaking, the
panel has an easier time assessing live auditions, so every effort should be made to participate in person. The winner
must submit a promotional photo and bio for the concert program and poster. Your completed application must arrive at
the address below no later than January 31, 2012.
