Who is required to attend New Employee Orientation?
The Joint Commission Standard HR.01.04.01 requires that the SFGH provide orientation to staff. Staff is
defined as clinical and non-clinical personnel working on the SFGH campus. This includes those hired
through CCSF and UCSF, along with non-clinical student interns.
What happens if a new employee is unable to attend the scheduled orientation date?
At the time of HR processing, the new employee is scheduled an orientation date and provided with a
confirmation letter. If the new employee notifies HR that they cannot attend the scheduled orientation
date during appointment processing, HR will reschedule orientation and adjust their start date.
What topics are covered during orientation?

Orientation is held in the Curring Carlise Learning Center. See map below

Does every new employee attend both days (Monday and Tuesday) of orientation?
Orientation is very content specific according to classification and work function. Please refer to the two
(2) groups of new employees and corresponding orientation requirements on the next page. If you have

1.) Non-Clinical Employees include CCSF and UCSF employees who DO NOT provide direct patient
care such as, and not limited to: Patient Accounting/Billing, Information Systems, Program Planner,
Analysts, Engineers, Porters, Medical Records Technicians, Food Service, Eligibility, Environmental
Services/Porter, Sheriffs and other Security Personnel, Biomedical Engineering, Administrative Support,
Facilities, and etc.

2.) Clinical Employees include CCSF and UCSF employees who practice under a license or
certification and provide direct patient care with exception of clinical students and providers (Active
Medical Staff, Physician’s Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, and Nurse Midwives). Only nursing
classifications (highlighted in red) are required to attend the Nursing Topics section during Clinical
Orientation (Tuesday 1:00-5:00).

How do I know if the new employee attended orientation?
Managers can log into Halogen and check the new employee’s attendance compliance. If the new
employee does not attend an email will be sent to the manager. Students will provide preceptors a
certificate of completion.
