Scott Lindroth, Provost for the Arts at Duke
Scott Lindroth has been on the faculty at Duke since the fall of
1990, having earned degrees in music composition from the
Eastman School of Music (BM 1980) and the Yale School of Music
(DMA 1991). My work as a composer has centered on
instrumental and vocal media, including compositions for the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the
Philadelphia Orchestra, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, and the
Ciompi Quartet. I have also composed music for dance, theater,
and video. Recordings of my work are available on CRI,
Equilibrium, and the Centaur labels. Recent works include Nasuh
for soprano and string quartet, and Bell Plates for percussion solo and electronic
sound.
I presently teach undergraduate seminars in electronic music (MUS 153-154S),
music theory, and graduate seminars on composition-related topics. Together with
Stephen Jaffe and Anthony Kelley, we present the concert series Encounters with
the Music of Our Time each year, featuring music by distinguished visiting
composers in residence in performances by our faculty artists and visiting
performers.

Fred Raimi, cellist in the Ciompi Quartet and Professor of the Practice of
Music
In addition to his work with the Ciompi Quartet, Fred Raimi
especially enjoys the opportunity to perform with his wife,
Jane Hawkins. Jane has performed often with the Ciompi
Quartet and its members, going back to recitals with Giorgio
Ciompi in the 1970s.
Mr. Raimi began his studies as a youth in Detroit at Cass
Technical High School. This season he and Jane Hawkins will
join forces with an old Detroit friend, Richard Luby, for a
concert of Beethoven and Brahms trios for the Mallarme
Chamber Players.
Mr. Raimi joined the Duke faculty and the Ciompi Quartet in 1974, after graduating
from the Juilliard School and receiving a Masters degree from State University of
New York-Binghamton, where he performed as a member of the Amici Quartet.
Among his marks of distinction, Mr. Raimi has won the International Cello
Competition in Portugal and was a participant in Pablo Casals’ final master class.
His instrument was made by Vincenzo Ruggieri in Cremona, Italy, in 1691.
