Press release/21 July. Photo Shanghai, Asia’s premier art fair dedicated to photography, today
announces its full list of participating galleries, programme highlights and partners for 2015. This
year, from both East and West, the fair brings together some of the most exciting names from the
world of fine art photography.
The second edition of the highly curated and elegant fair organised by the World Photography
Organisation, will return to the Shanghai Exhibition Centre from 11-13 September. Featuring fifty
leading international galleries and over 500 works of art for sale by artists including: Nobuyoshi
Araki, Birdhead, Guy Bourdin, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Hsieh Chun-te, Elliott Erwitt, Chien-Chi
Chang, Yang Fudong, Candida Höfer, Horst P. Horst, Axel Hüette, André Kertész, Steven Klein,
Gustave Le Gray, Aki Lumi, Daido Moriyama, Vik Muniz, Jimmy Nelson, Helmut Newton, Erwin
Olaf, Yuki Onodera, Jiang Pengyi, Irving Penn, Herb Ritts, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Zhang Xiao, Boomoon,
Feng Mengbo, Feng Yan and Yang Yongliang among many others.
Photo Shanghai will offer exceptional prospects for international collectors to explore works by
emerging and established artists from across the Asia Pacific region and will offer local collectors the
chance to see works by internationally renowned artists from the West. Photo Shanghai is
Shanghai’s most international art fair and the leading platform for the photographic medium in the
Asia Pacific region.




2015 programme highlights
In addition to showcasing both established and emerging international photographers, Photo
Shanghai is committed to curating museum scale and quality exhibitions, as well as exploring the
relationship between photography and other media. Reflective of this, the programme includes:
Taryn Simon exhibition hosted by Gagosian Gallery
In Asia for the first time, a special museum scale exhibition of 156 works by celebrated American
artist Taryn Simon will be presented by Gagosian Gallery. Simon’s seminal Birds of the West Indies
series showcases the artists unique weaving of photography, text and graphic design which has
made her one of the finest contemporary photographers working today.
Cutting edge video installation, curated by Professor Zhang Peili
One of China’s foremost video artists, Professor Zhang Peili will curate work from established and
emerging artists using video as their main media. Presented in the Fair’s dedicated video room, the
installation explores how different generations of video artists portray their surroundings. As part of
the Fair’s talk programme Professor Zhang Peili will also speak about his curation and the relevance
of moving image within the broader art scene in Asia.
Participating galleries
This year Photo Shanghai will see international galleries from 15 countries present the best in
collectible vintage and contemporary fine art photography. These countries include: Mainland
China, Taiwan, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore, the US, the UK, amongst others.

Events programme
Photo Shanghai 2015 will offer visitors an extensive public and VIP programme, with each event
intended to further explore our commitment to celebrate the international fine art photography
market in China and the exposure of international artists.
Every morning of the Fair, the Talks Programme will offer the public a rare opportunity to meet with
and listen to photographers and experts from East and West.
An exciting addition for 2015 is the Talks Programme’s Artist in Profile section. Taking the format of
an ‘in conversation’ between an artist and a relevant expert in the field, talks include: Aki Lumi and
Yuki Onodera with Lise Li (Vanguard Gallery); Chien-Chi Chang with Anna-Patricia Kahn (°CLAIR
GALLERY); Arno Rafael Minkinnen with Ellen. K. Willas (Willas Contemporary), Yan Wang Preston
with curator Zelda Cheatle; Erwin Olaf with Madga Danysz (MD Gallery), and Jacob Aue Sobol and
Alessandra Sanguinetti with Sophie Wright (Magnum Photos).
After the success of last year’s education series we will also offer another enlightening educational
panel with experts Shi Han Tao, Steven Harris and Lise Li, aimed at collectors buying for the first
time. The Fair will explore the role of photography in international museums with curators
Christopher Phillips (ICP, New York) and Liu Heung Shing (ScOP, Shanghai). In addition WSJ. The
Wall Street Journal Magazine photography director Jennifer Pastore will give audiences insight into
the magazine's approach to photographing many of the world's most esteemed artists.
The talks programme continues with the ground-breaking and famed contemporary landscape
photographer Jimmy Nelson who will share with the audience his most exciting journeys through
the Asia Pacific region. Curator Davide Quadrio will explore in-depth his inspiration behind his
recent show at the Aurora Museum (Shanghai). Alexander Montague-Sparey will join Peter McGill
(Founder Pace/MacGill Gallery, New York) at the West Bund Arts Centre for a talk around the theme
of collecting photography. This talk will be moderated by SCoP Founder Liu Heung Shing and Karen
Smith. Eric Valli will be speaking at 10 Corso Como with National Geographic about his project Living
Yangtze (Saturday 12 September at 5pm, 10 Corso Como, Shanghai).
Book signings will run throughout the Fair and include signings by Michio Yamauchi (Taka Ishii
Gallery), RongRong & inri (Three Shadows +3 Gallery) Erwin Olaf (MD Gallery), Jacob Aue Sobol
(Magnum Photos), Eric Valli (Swarovski Waterschool) and Feng Yan (Shanghai Gallery of Art).
A hand-picked selection of local experiences is on offer to our VIPS. Exclusive events include private
tours of collectors Qiao Zhibing's iconic karaoke nightclub and art collection, as well as interior
designer Alan Chan’s Shanghai home, and private tours of the Sifang Art Museum, the Rockbund
Museum and the Mingqi Art District.
Partners
Photo Shanghai is proud to collaborate with the following partners, each of whom will present
exclusive events at the Fair:
Principle Partner Swarovski Waterschool will show exclusive images by Oscar nominated filmmaker
and photographer Eric Valli, commissioned to document the lives of seven communities along the
Yangtze River. The complete exhibition of the work will be on show at Jing’An Park from 9 -27
September and a shuttle bus will run from Gate 2 of Photo Shanghai to the Park every 20 minutes.
Eric Valli himself will be at Photo Shanghai and Jing’An Park over the weekend to speak with visitors
about the project.
Fellow Principle Partner De Beers Diamond Jewellers, in collaboration with renowned photographer
Mary McCartney, will highlight women across varying industries to explore their talents and their
Moments in Light - exceptional moments of their lives that they hold most cherished.
Photo Partner Leica Camera will present three photographers' works, each showing a multi-faceted
view on China: stunning aerial photographs of China captured in the 1930s by aviation pioneer WulfDiether Graf zu Castell-Rüdenhausen and contemporary landscapes of the country by German
architecture photographer HG Esch are united for the exhibition: China from Above, together with a
personal documentary of China by the young and poetic fine-art photographer Jing Huang.
America Express is the VIP Partner of Photo Shanghai, and as a long-time art supporter, American
Express will invite honoured card members to the preview of the event.
Watch Partner and Swiss luxury brand Hublot will present selected artworks by renowned visual
artist Chen Man, the brand’s first female Chinese ambassador, in an exhibition named The Art of
Fusion which fuses traditional Chinese philosophical culture and modern fashion.
Artsy, the resource for learning about and collecting art from over 40 of the world’s most influential
art fairs, is the Official Online Partner of the Fair. For the first time, collectors and art enthusiasts can
explore Photo Shanghai 2015, enquire on works for sale, and view special features on Artsy.net and
the Artsy app for iPhone and iPad. A dedicated microsite featuring the exclusive online preview of
the Fair will launch on Artsy on 8 September.
For the event, Castel, Europe’s largest wine producer with over sixty years experience of spreading
the word about French wines throughout the world, is Photo Shanghai’s Wine Partner. Light & Salt,
one of Shanghai’s leading lifestyle brands featuring modern bistro, wine bar and boutique retail
space is the Food & Beverage Partner. The Hotel Partner is Hotel Indigo®, the first international
chained boutique hotel brand in the world, an upscale boutique hotel brand under IHG.
International media partner WSJ: The Wall Street Journal Magazine will exhibit a selection of artist
portraits from the magazine including a recent portfolio of 21 portraits of contemporary artists
whose work is a part of the Broad Art Foundation. Over the years, the publication has recruited
some of the industry’s top photographers to shoot many of the world’s best-known artists and art
world figures, from Richard Prince to Kara Walker to Marian Goodman. This exhibition will display
the visual breadth and diversity of the magazine’s approach to these timeless shoots.
Modern Media Group, China’s leading media company whose portfolio includes Modern Weekly,
The Art Newspaper China and iWeekly, is the Fair’s Chinese Media Partner. It will present the LEAP
Pavilion, a roving curated exhibition of up to 20 handpicked emerging artists from across China,
whose work will debut at Photo Shanghai.
Photo Shanghai is part of Shanghai Art Week. Combing West Bund Art & Design (8-13 Sept.), Photo
Shanghai (10-13 Sept.) and Art in the City Festival (11-14 Sept.), the very best in contemporary art
takes over the city in Shanghai Art Week. Art lovers and collectors can enjoy exciting new
exhibitions, talks and events by leading Chinese and international museums, galleries and
art institutions across the city. Shanghai will be brought alive with art in the second week
of September like never before.

Photo San Francisco
A new addition to the World Photography Organisation portfolio, Photo San Francisco will launch in 2017.
Running from 20-22 January 2017, America’s new international art fair for fine art photography will offer a
cutting-edge programme curated by Photo Shanghai Director Alexander Montague-Sparey. The fair will take

About Alexander Montague-Sparey, Fair Director
Alexander Montague-Sparey is the Founding Director of art advisory MONTAGUE-SPAREY. In this capacity he
advises international collectors and institutions on photography acquisitions, curates large scale exhibitions in
Europe, Asia and the US, and commissions shows for international luxury brands. Prior to this, Alexander was
the youngest Director in the history of Christie’s and their Head of Photographs in London.
