Griffith University and James Cook University Collaborative Grants Guidelines Application Deadline: Tuesday, 12 June 2012. The Scheme Griffith University and James Cook University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which aims to expand cooperation and the exchange of ideas between the two institutions in the area of tropical science, knowledge and innovation, including: tropical health and medicine; climate change adaptation in the tropics; water resources in the tropics; biodiversity in the tropics; indigenous studies; urban planning for the tropics and subtropics; and such other areas as the parties shall agree. The purpose of the scheme is to assist researchers to develop collaborative research projects which will lead to joint publications in high quality research outlets and joint external grants. The scheme is co-funded by the institutions. Eligibility Each application must include at least one researcher from each institution, both of whom hold a continuing or fixed-term academic appointment for 2012/2013. Applications in the 2012 round must be in the following areas: tropical health and medicine; climate change adaptation in the tropics; water resources in the tropics; biodiversity in the tropics; or Indigenous studies. Terms and Conditions Grants will be awarded in the range of $5,000 to $10,000. Up to 8 grants will be awarded. Funding may be used to undertake small scale projects which will provide the groundwork for larger scale external grant applications or publications in quality research outlets. Funds must be expended by the end of 2013. Assessment Criteria Applications will be assessed by a joint panel of staff from James Cook University and Griffith, with equal representation from each institution. Excellence will be the primary criterion. The selection committee will consider: The quality of the aims, significance, research plan and proposed outcomes of the research collaboration. The track records of the chief investigators, relative to opportunity. How well the proposed project contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the nominated tropical research area/s of: (i) tropical health and medicine; (ii) climate change adaptation; (iii) water resources; (iv) biodiversity (v) Indigenous studies Likelihood of benefits to Griffith University and James Cook University including establishment and/or continuation of a long-term research collaboration, funded by external funding sources and leading to high profile collaborative publications. Applications seeking to use funding to leverage external funding schemes may be given priority over otherwise equally ranked applications.
