DESCRIPTION: This elective will provide broad exposure to the comprehensive management of the acutely ill psychiatric inpatient in a large teaching
hospital in suburban Vancouver. Students will be exposed to a broad range of psychopathology, and work closely with a primary staff psychiatrist supervisor
as well as residents and other medical students. Observed interviews with detailed feedback on interview process as well as treatment planning will be fundamental aspects of
this rotation. Students will be given gradually increasing responsibility for the management of patients. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in the
many other learning opportunities offered in the department, including grand rounds, a phenomenology course, clinical case conference rounds, an interview skills course, and
Journal Club rounds.
This elective will also provide an opportunity for exposure to the Royal Columbian Hospital Department of psychiatry which is the primary teaching
site for the UBC Fraser Health Greater Vancouver Psychiatry Residency Program.
The two primary supervisors of this rotation are Dr. Anson Koo and Dr. Janel Casey.
OBJECTIVES: Development of general psychiatric skills and knowledge within an inpatient setting with high acuity and turnover. Development and application of knowledge
and skills in psychiatric interviewing, treatment planning, psychopharmacology and psychotherapeutic interventions. Development of an understanding of the organization
of psychiatric services within a large community oriented suburban regional teaching hospital. Development of an understanding of the continuum of care
between acute inpatient services and community-based mental health services. Development of an understanding of the nature of multidisciplinary psychiatric care.
Development of an understanding of, and comprehensive approach to, the management of the substance-addicted patient.

SPECIAL FEATURES: The Royal Columbian Hospital department of psychiatry has a reputation for outstanding clinical psychiatric education and a warm friendly supportive
and collegial atmosphere which fosters learning and cooperative teamwork. This elective rotation also provides an opportunity for students who are interested in psychiatry as a
career to meet staff psychiatrists and residents in the UBC Fraser Health Psychiatry Residency Program.
