RNZYS INTRODUCES INAUGURAL NESPRESSO NATIONAL
YOUTH TRAINING WEEK SCHOLARSHIP
13 October 2015: The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s annual Nespresso National Youth Training
Week is now in its 26th year and the December event is fast-approaching.
Promising young sailing talent, mentored by aspiring sailors from around New Zealand, will converge on
Kawau Island for the week-long intensive course which will see participants “simply eating, sleeping and
sailing”, says Hayden Porter, General Manager of RNZYS.
Each year, places are limited and all 44 were snapped up for 2015 in record time. However, thanks to
Nespresso – a key supporter of sailing in NZ – an opportunity has been created for one deserving, young
sailor who has applied to receive their fee paid by Nespresso. Applications are open now for this training
week scholarship and applicants are asked to simply send in a 100-word max paragraph on why they
should be selected.
The National Youth Training Week began in 1989 and has grown in popularity year on year.
“The learning curve is very steep and there’s a lot of training to get through. The participants are
mentored by members of the Youth Training Programme, a year-long regime covering every element of
sailing on and off the water each weekend”, says Porter.
Past Nespresso National Youth Training Week participants include Chris Steele and Phil Robertson, who
are currently ranked in the top 12 in the World for Match Racing.
Nespresso is in its fourth year of sponsoring the Youth Training Week, Guillaume Chesneau, Country
Manager for Nespresso New Zealand says, “Nespresso is proud to offer its support to this event, which
nurtures the next generation of New Zealand sailors to continue their pursuit of excellence on the world
stage.”
Hayden Porter adds, “Raw talent, a dedicated coaching programme and sponsorship from partners like
Nespresso, continues to cement New Zealand’s top spot in global youth sailing.”
