Enhanced Freshman Mathematics: MAT 110 Fall– 2012 Syllabus Course Information Course Description Welcome to MAT 110! The purpose of this course is to prepare you for college-level mathematics courses. You will work on various modules in the LearningStudio platform taking advantage of a new adaptive learning technology designed to help you progress through the materials based on your individual needs. This course has two tracks: Track 1, “pre-math117”, and Track 2, “pre-math142”, depending on your major. If you do not currently have a major, you are in Track 1 by default. Students in Track 1 must complete 52 lessons and earn a total of 6 metals. Students in Track 2 must complete 46 lessons and earn a total of 6 metals. You are “On Track” if you are at a pace that, if maintained, you will complete the course before the end of the semester. You are “Off Track” if you are going at a pace where you will not complete the course before the end of the semester. It will also indicate how many lessons you need to complete to get back on track. Once you have completed all of your lessons and metals, final will open. Then you will sign up for a time to take the final exam for this course. All final exams must be taken no later than December 11, 2012. Prerequisites This course is open to any student scoring below 30 on the placement exam. It will take about 2 minutes to complete the evaluation activity. Don’t forget you will need to include your name and ASURITE ID on the evaluation activity in order to get credit for completing the task. NOTE: If you took MAT 194 in Fall 2011 or Spring 2012 your course included the same evaluation activity. You will need to complete the evaluation activity again in this course. How to Succeed in this Course Unlike other courses you may have taken, the Knewton Powered courses may require a different study process than the one you are used to. Check your ASU e-mail regularly. Log in to the course site every day. Try and set aside time to work on math every day. Don’t wait and try to cram it all in at the last minute. STAY ON TRACK!!! Watch the videos and read the textbook before you take your quizzes. When you watch the video lectures, treat them like you would any classroom lecture. That is, keep a notebook and take notes as you watch the videos. Pause and rewind the videos as needed. Watch them as many times as you need to. Pause the videos and try and work out the problems on your own. Then start the video again to see how you did. Work out all the problems in your notebook in an organized fashion. If you solved them incorrectly, make sure you go back and correct your work. If you fail any section two or more times, set up a meeting with your instructor for help. Take your notebook to class as well. It will be handy for problem solving. Take breaks – If you are stuck on a problem for a long time, take a short break. Often times you will do a much better job at understanding the problem once your brain has had a chance to rest. Make a list of questions you have to take into class. Ask your instructor for help with them Give yourself time to study before the final exam. This course site can be accessed through myASU at http://my.asu.edu Computer Requirements This course requires that you have access to a computer that can access the internet. A popular free alternative is Open Office. (http://www.openoffice.org/) You are responsible for having a reliable computer and internet connection throughout the course. Your goal is to earn all the metals and pass the final exam Final Exam: Once you have earned all your unit badges in Knewton Study Center, you will be able to take the final exam. You must schedule your unit exam using Tutor Track to take your final in a proctored environment. It’s required you bring headphones for the exam. You must take the exam before December 11, 2012, and there are no extensions. If you follow the recommender and stay on track, you should have no trouble meeting the deadline. Grading Policy Studying, Preparation and outside of class time. This is a hybrid course and therefore the majority of your work will be taken online outside of the classroom. You will be expected to spend a minimum of 6 hours per week outside of class. All assignments and course interactions will utilize web-based technologies. Grade Assignment If this is your first time taking MAT 110, then the course is graded pass/continuation (Y/Z). There is no letter grade associated with this course. If you fail to complete all of your work by the last day of class or do not pass the final exam, you will be given the Z (continuation) grade, meaning that you will need to retake the course the following semester, repay the course fee, and start from the beginning. If this is your second time taking the course (meaning you received the Z the previous attempt), then the course is graded pass/fail (Y/E). If you fail to complete all of your work by the last day of class or do not pass the final exam, you will be given the E grade. There is no third attempt.
