“What the World Needs Now—A Musical Tribute to Burt Bacharach” Returns to Cotuit
Center for the Arts
Cotuit Center for the Arts presents “What the World Needs Now—A Musical Tribute to
Burt Bacharach” Thursday, June 11, through Sunday, June 14. Performances are 7:30 on
Thursday and Friday, 4 and 8 PM on Saturday, and 4 PM on Sunday.
The musical revue, which is produced and directed by Ruth Condon, was originally
presented at CCftA in March of last year. “We sold out every performance,” said
Condon. “The audience—and the cast members—enjoyed it so much that we are
bringing it back by popular demand.”
The show has been a lifelong dream for Condon who is also performing in it, along with
the original cast: Sarah Swain, a Cape favorite singer and songwriter; jazz singer Cerise
Bynoe; Emily Wade Adams, who grew up on the Cape, and has been singing retro R&B,
and swing jazz around the country; singer and theater veteran Anthony Teixeira; and
singer/songwriter Tom Tracy.
Burt Bacharach has written 73 Top 40 hits, won six Grammy Awards and three Academy
Awards, and is currently writing a Broadway musical with Elvis Costello based on the
album “Painted by Memory” they created in the 1990s. His music is part of American
culture.
The show will feature 29 songs written between 1958 and 1995, including “Walk on By,”
“Wishin’ and Hopin,’” Alfie,” “Heartlight,” and “This House is Empty Now,” a
collaboration with Elvis Costello, and features anecdotes and short vignettes, including
projected images and video.
The singers will be backed by a live band featuring pianist Mike Garvan, George Machon
on trumpet, flute, fluglehorn and percussion, Michael Dunford on drums, Tad Price on
electric and nylon string guitar, and Ron Ormsby on upright and electric bass. The
singers will add to the instrumental mix, with Tracy playing harmonica and Swain on
ukulele and guitar. Pam Wills is choreographing the show.
Ruth Condon has been performing for 42 years. She is the producer-director of many
sold-out shows, including “What The World Needs Now—A Musical Tribute to Burt
Bacharach,” “Anthony Teixeira Sings Tony Bennett Duets with Friends,” “The Beat Goes
On—A Musical Journey Through the 60s,” The Kami Lyle Sit-A-While music series and
two upcoming shows, “Love is Blind: Music Inspired by Amy Winehouse” and “The
Brazilian Cultural Festival.”
Tickets are $28, $25 for seniors, and $22 for CCftA members. Seating is cabaret style,
and premium tables with wine are available.
Cotuit Center for the Arts is at 4404 Route 28 in Cotuit. For more information, visit
