CITY UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG Hall 8 and Jockey Club House Active Resident Award Regulations With the goal of developing a healthy and active residence life among postgraduate students, the “Active Resident Award” (ARA) is established at Hall 8 and Jockey Club House (JCH) of the Student Residence, City University of Hong Kong for the following purposes: a. To reward residents who proactively participate in and contribute to extracurricular activities organized by the hall and the SRO; b. To promote a balance between study and personal life among postgraduate residents by encouraging them to be involved in the residential and community life; c. To cultivate and strengthen the hall spirit as well as a support network among residents; d. To encourage community service. The following regulations shall apply as of 2015/16. 1. The Award will be known as the “Active Resident Award” (活躍宿生獎). 2. There will be a maximum of EIGHT Awards (nominally up to 6 ARAs in Hall 8 and up to 2 ARAs in JCH) each semester (hereinafter the “award semester”). 3. The maximum amount of each award is HK$2,000. This amount will offset the corresponding portion of the hall fee for the final month of the subsequent academic semester (hereinafter the “aid semester”), provided the awardee continued to be active. If the awardee is not required to pay the hall fee in the aid semester, the award itself will be deemed to have been given but its monetary component will be forfeited. 4. To be eligible for ARA, the applicant must be a registered full-time student of City University of Hong Kong residing in Hall 8 or JCH for at least the entire semester, summer term excluded. 5. The applicant’s relative merit for receiving ARA will be assessed based on contributions to the residence or community life. These could be demonstrated in the form of: a) leading, organizing, developing and participating in, or otherwise contributing to, the floor/hall/SRO/HK community (e.g. in hall sports teams, intra/inter-hall sports activities and other floor/hall/SRO/community activities); and b) developing a supportive and comfortable living and learning environment (e.g. creating a positive living and learning atmosphere, and providing support and assistance to other residents). 6. Conditions of Award Acceptance: i. The ARA scheme is not applicable to RTs, residents whose hall fees are covered by another scholarship/award scheme in the aid semester, and those exceeding the University’s upper limit on the total annual amount of scholarships/grants/awards of HK$160,000 (after ARA). ii. Winners of ARA are required to reside continuously in Hall 8 or JCH for the entire aid semester and are expected to play an active and advisory role to assist the RM and RTs in iii. iv. organizing hall activities. Breach of hall rules and Regulations Governing Student Residence will lead to the forfeiture of the Award amount. Should the award recipient fail to meet the requirements stated in the Regulations of Hall Scholarships or violate Regulations Governing Student Residence, the Scholarship Selection Panel reserves the right to withdraw the award at any time, including during the aid semester. With the objective of nurturing students and promoting a caring culture, the Community Relations Committee of the University Council has recommended that each award/scholarship recipient be requested to make an annual donation of at least HK$200 to City University of Hong Kong for student support via CityU Alumni Giving Club once they are gainfully employed after graduation. This term has been incorporated into all scholarship/prize/award/bursary schemes, whether those by external donors or contributed by University funding. 7. Procedures and Schedule: 7.1 Nomination and Application: i. The nomination period for the ARA will be in November and March. ii. Nominations of qualified residents of Hall 8 and JCH can originate from their Floor Representatives, fellow residents or from themselves. iii. The nominations detailing one’s contributions are to be submitted to a Residence Tutor during the prescribed nomination period (please use a dedicated form). iv. All applicants will automatically be considered for the Chan Sui Hung Best Student Award. 7.2 Selection Process: i. The full list of nominees will be announced at the end of December and April of each academic year. ii. The ARA selection committee will be comprised of the RM and RT team of Hall 8 and JCH. In addition, the RM may invite one or two other member(s) to serve in the selection committee. iii. The applicant is responsible for the truthfulness and correctness of his/her application. The applicant should be prepared to submit evidence from reliable sources for verification on request. Unverifiable information may be disregarded. iv. Interviews may be conducted to facilitate the selection process. 7.3 Result Announcement: i. Winners will be announced in December and April of each academic year. ii. All decisions by the Selection Panel are final. No appeals will be accepted. Remark: RM and SRO will evaluate the ARA scheme and reserve the right to modify the Regulations and the number of awards to be given out in any year.
