1. Welcome - Richard Hirsh

requested contacts in Cambodia in order to explore opportunities to build OHS capacity there with
Universities and NGOs.


Liaison Committee update (Garrett)
1. RFP Project Update

during Battery Recycling in the Informal Sector) in Kenya is underway with collecting samples and
proceeding with the project. She’s working with some small scale recyclers to do the assessment.
b) Nina – Stonecutters in India: Final Report Issued
Final report was issued. Rich presented a summary of the technical project at the conference –
discussing the MOU, the new regulations in place, etc. Nina to follow-up with them to see what their
future plans are.
c) David Z – Loomweavers in India:
Study has been approved, designing epi questionnaire. Going to do medical exams including pulmonary
function testing and Chest X-rays of 100 loom weavers.
d) Karen – Asbestos workshop and project, wire transfer issue
Karen has done a lot of prep work and has designed some simple air sample collection forms. She has
met with the workers and LION. Karen developed a comprehensive sampling program for University of
Indonesia. A PhD student and doctor went to a WHO conference on asbestos in Manila but they felt
rather embarrassed because Indonesia wasn’t very forthcoming on their Indonesia stats. (Vietnam
provided a better update than Indonesia)
The asbestos workshop with LION and UI was very successful. It was attended by lawyers, physicians,
activists, Korean doctors, etc – about 30 people total attended. The Korean doctors identified three early
asbestos cases. The workshop was supposed to be at UI, but ended up being held at a hotel.
Karen will give info to Garrett on who the check should be made out to. Check should be issued in this
calendar year.
