MEDIA INFORMATION FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 18, 2012 Career Center Offers Summer Camps for Students JACKSON, Mich. – Jackson Area Career Center will offer six different camps this summer for students who want to have some fun while exploring careers. Students and parents will find camps at the Career Center that will help improve academic skills while teaching basic career skills through “hands-on” projects and demonstrations. The 2012 summer camps include: Reading and Writing Rock! When: June 25 – 28, Monday-Thursday, 8:00am to 12:00noon Where: Technology Lab Who: For students entering grades 6-8 in fall 2012 What: Explore careers in reading and writing Cost: $35 Are you a budding novelist? You’ll love this camp! No grades will be given, just a week full of mastering words, learning the techniques to make better readers, and just mostly having fun while preparing your own personal portfolio! Carpentry Camp for Kids When: June 25 – 28, Monday-Thursday, 8:00am to 12:00noon Where: Construction Lab Who: For students entering grades 6-8 in fall 2012 What: Explore careers in carpentry Cost: $35 Do you love to pound nails and cut lumber? Want to learn the “tricks” of the construction trade? Join this four-day camp and gain valuable skills in basic woodworking by mastering hand tools, making measurements, and the learning the basic principles of carpentry. Students will build a toolbox to take home as well a make other fun projects. Girls are welcome! Engineering/Project Lead the Way When: June 25 – 29, Monday-Thursday, 8:00am to 3:00pm, and Friday, 8:00am to 12:00noon (special parent luncheon!) Where: Manufacturing Labs Who: For students entering grades 9-11 in fall 2012 What: Explore careers in engineering Cost: $35 Do you like to use scientific and mathematical principals to design, build, and operate things? Then YOU have the ability to succeed in an engineering career! Explore engineering in this camp by completing fun projects while using applied math and science the “fun” way! Army JROTC Horse Riding Camps When: Session 1: June 18 – 21 Session 2: July 2 – 6 (no camp July 4) Session 3 : July 9 – 12 Mondays-Thursdays, 8:00am to 12:00noon Where: Royal Farms, Grass Lake Who: For students entering grades 6-12 in fall 2012 What: Learn about horses with riding Instruction Cost: $75 Class Limit: 16 students Do you like horses and want to have fun while learning to ride? Join this camp and learn about safety, horse care, the different riding styles and even sulky/harness racing. Three sessions are offered to fit in your summer schedule. Army JROTC Rifle Camp When: June 25 – 28, Monday-Thursday, 8:00am to 12:00 noon Where: Multi-purpose room Who: For students entering grades 9-12 in fall 2012 What: Explore air-rifle safety and marksmanship skills Cost: $30 Class Limit: 34 students Learn Olympic-style air-rifle safety and marksmanship, including standing, kneeling, and prone positions with pellet guns and paper targets.
