DFI Publishes Combined Glossary/Lexicon
Deep Foundations Industry Encouraged to Contribute
Hawthorne, NJ (March 12, 2013): DFI Europe, a regional chapter of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI), has
published a combined Glossary/Lexicon that merges the DFI Glossary, which included industry definitions
mainly used in North America, with a Lexicon of geotechnical terms based on the English language with
translations into several European languages. The CEN (European Committee for Standardization) standard
terms are included in the Glossary/Lexicon.
According to Tony Butcher, DFI Europe board member and chair of the Reviewing Committee for the
Glossary/Lexicon, the goal is to maintain an up-to-date document of equivalent deep foundation terminology
used throughout North America and Europe; with plans to expand to other parts of the world.
Industry professionals can review the Glossary/Lexicon and propose additions and changes using an online form
at www.dfi-europe.org. When proposing changes or additions, people are asked to indicate whether a
definition or term comes from an ASTM, a CEN Execution or Design Standard (EC7), a DIN Standard or the ICE
SPERW, national standards or specification documents, or any other document.
