FULL DAY WORKSHOPS (CHOOSE 1):
Tier 1 School-wide PBIS: Getting Started, Coaching, Problem
Solving and Growing as a Team
Sue VandeVoorte, M.Ed, PBIS Coordinator, Highline Public Schools
This coaching strand will focus on defining and building the coaching
and systems level support for Tier I PBIS School Teams preparing for
initial implementation and enhancement of Tier I. Tier I is comprised of
school & classroom-wide universal systems and practices that foster
safe, responsive and effective teaching/learning environments. Schoolwide systems support all adults in their ability to provide students with
evidence-based practices that result in reducing problem behavior and
maximizing student learning outcomes.
Presenter will share strategies to assess readiness, increase staff and
district buy-in, and build the quality of a school-wide implementation
through coaching actions. Participants will learn what essential
evaluation and measurement tools are key to supporting schools and
assessing the fidelity of implementation.
This session is for building-based teams, coaches, counselors, behavior
specialists, general and special education district administrators who
provide support and coaching to school teams implementing Tier 1
School-wide PBIS.
Coaching Advanced Tiers: Tier II Systems
Kelcey N. Schmitz, MS.Ed,
Director of Implementation
& Innovation, Center for
Strong Schools, UWT
School-wide PBIS is the most scaled up and studied multi-tiered system
of support (MTSS) framework. A solid Tier 2 system is a critical layer of
supports and interventions to any effective MTSS to respond to students
with challenging behavior or struggling in school. This session will
describe the elements of a comprehensive Tier II system including
screening, a continuum of interventions, progress monitoring, teaming
and fidelity of implementation. Attendees will leave with a range of
tools for assessing, developing and implementing a comprehensive Tier
II System in their school.
This session will specifically target coaching skills, practices and data
tools for supporting school teams with implementation of Tier II
systems and interventions in schools. The session will also present
considerations for district-level planning and implementation to best
support schools with implementation of Tier II SW-PBIS.
Outcomes: To develop understanding and support schools to implement
a comprehensive Tier 2 PBIS System of Behavior Support for students
at-risk. Prerequisite knowledge: Tier I Systems, Practices, & Data
Coaching Advanced Tiers: Tier III Systems
Tier III: Functional Behavioral Assessment and Support
Planning: Assessment strategies for developing an individualized
behavior support plan.
Teri Lewis, Oregon Director, NorthWest PBIS Network
This session provides training in Functional Behavioral Assessment and
Support Planning. The presenters will cover the primary strategies for
completing a Functional Behavioral Assessment including strategies for
interviewing staff; parents and students; and strategies for direct
observation. Participants will receive training and practice in each of
these strategies. The session will also include training in how to create
an effective Behavior Support Plan. Function based support planning
teaches how to align intervention strategies with the function of
problem behavior, and how to take advantage of the student’s strengths
when developing support strategies. Effective BSP’s include strategies
for prevention; strategies for teaching replacement behaviors;
strategies for increasing reinforcement for appropriate behavior; and
strategies for minimizing reward for inappropriate behavior. The
session will also cover strategies for assessing fidelity of
implementation and for collecting progress monitor data.
Who should attend: Behavior specialists; school counselors;
administrators; school psychologists.
Team Initiated Problem Solving (TIPS) TIPS for Teams & Coaches:
Using data for decision-making, monitoring progress, and
evaluating the effectiveness of implementation
Tricia Hagerty, M.Ed. Washington Director, NorthWest PBIS Network
This full day workshop is intended to train teams and implementation
coaches in the TIPS Model to enhance implementation efforts. The Team
Initiated Problem Solving Model includes strengthening the
effectiveness of meetings, access to accurate, timely data, and a
systematic formal problem solving approach a team can use to build and
implement solutions. You cannot say something does not work if it
hasn’t been delivered the way it was intended. This model includes a
process for checking fidelity of implementation and evaluating the
effectiveness of an intervention and its impact on student outcomes.
TIPS Training Goals:
1. Develop & strengthen effective meeting foundations
 Roles, responsibilities, agreements
 Electronic Meeting Minutes
 Access Data for Decision Making
 Communication
2. Learn & Build Fluency Using the TIPS Problem Solving Model
 Define a Problem with Precision
 Goal Setting
 Identifying Effective Solutions
 Action Planning
 Checking Fidelity, Coaching, and Evaluating Impact
3. Leave ready to implement & coach TIPS at your next meeting
 Prepare meeting minutes
 Plan for coaching support
