The purpose of this form is to provide first year MEM students planning to complete the
Certificate Program in Community-Based Environmental Management a means to get feedback
on their course plan and ensure that it meets all of program requirements. The completed form is
due by APRIL 1 OF YOUR FIRST YEAR, but can be turned in earlier.

Required Coursework
Students wishing to earn a certificate in Community-Based Environmental Management are
required to complete a series of courses in 4 core areas during the 2 year MEM program that will
add to a total of 12 course credits. Please fill out the table below with the courses you plan to

Master’s Project
The student’s master’s project must include a focus on community-based environmental
management and contain some significant application of the theories and skills learned from
certificate coursework. Please answer the following questions (in 3-5 sentences):
1) In what ways will your Master’s Project involve working with a community or communities?
2) Which of the theories and skills learned in your CBEM-related coursework do you plan to
apply in your Master’s Project? In what ways will these be applied?

Students may be allowed to substitute courses from other Duke departments or from UNC or NC
State to fulfill these requirements, but only when pre-approved by the Certificate Director. To
secure pre-approval, documentation of course content and a written justification of how the
substitution will enhance the student’s educational experience is submitted for approval to the
certificate manager BEFORE the course is taken in order to count toward completion of the
certificate.
