Addiction Information and Management Strategies (AIMS) Mandated Student Agreement AIMS Mandated Student Process AIMS is a free, confidential resource for Columbia University Medical Center students concerned about substance use, abuse, dependence or other concerning behaviors. AIMS services are delivered in a nonjudgmental manner, utilizing a harm reduction, student-goal centered approach. The AIMS office at CUMC utilizes the Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) for assessment of students referred for substance use concerns. BASICS is an evaluation program for alcohol and other drug use/abuse. Based on principles of motivational interviewing, BASICS is delivered in an empathetic, nonconfrontational, and nonjudgmental manner. BASICS consists of two 1-hour sessions with a brief assessment survey taken by the student after the first session. The first session gathers information about the student's recent alcohol/drug consumption patterns, personal beliefs about alcohol and other drugs, and history and provides instructions for the student’s completion of the assessment survey. Information from the assessment survey is used to develop a customized feedback profile for use in the second session, which compares personal alcohol/drug use with alcohol/drug use norms, reviews individualized negative consequences and risk factors, clarifies perceived risks and benefits of drinking/drug use, and provides options to assist in making changes to decrease or abstain from substance use. A confidential Electronic Medical Record will be maintained to document the progress of the Mandated Student Process. Student Agreement I agree to comply with AIMS program recommendations.
