“The Emerging Evidence for Immune System Control of Cancer: Engineering the Cure” Brendon Coventry *Free coffee will be provided* NOVEMBER 10, 2014 12PM-1PM Abstract: Immune system control of cancer has long been promised as a viable therapeutic solution, but likewise has remained unproven and enigmatic. Recent findings reinforce the tenet that the immune system is already responding to the cancer within the patient. Furthermore, it is capable of clinical effective cancer removal, but is being down-regulated to prevent in-vivo intrinsic efficacy. Problematically, using the immunotherapies noted above the strength and direction of immune stimulation cannot yet be determined, often resulting in serious auto-immunity, including treatment-related deaths. Our work shows that serial monitoring of inflammatory biomarkers in cancer patients reveals oscillatory behavior, such that the timing of dose administration appears pivotal for determining which way the immune response is being driven. Improvement of clinical efficacy using these immunotherapeutic approaches now brings the real prospect of cures from cancer firmly into reach. Brendon has a PhD in Cancer Immunology and research interests in cancer vaccine immunotherapies, and sentinel lymph node techniques. He is a Research Director of the Australian Melanoma Research Foundation and has had much success in treating metastatic disease in melanoma patients.
