ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
Jesus Christ Superstar – Arena Spectacular brings Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s
groundbreaking rock musical back to its rock arena roots, playing arenas for the first time since
the show originally debuted in 1971 at Pittsburgh’s Civic Arena. The tour played over 35 arena
performances in 2012 and 2013 in the UK and Australia and now this enormous technological
production featuring 60 performers, including an all-star cast, will rock audiences in over 50
North American arenas in 2014.
This well-known rock musical has been reimagined for the 21st century, as an arena rock
spectacular by director Laurence Connor and an award-winning creative team. The production
incorporates current political themes, contemporary costumes and set-designs based on a large
scale along with technological and visual effects customized for the arena space.
Coming from diverse musical backgrounds, the all-star cast combines their exceptional talent
on one stage in Jesus Christ Superstar – Arena Spectacular and includes: Incubus’ Brandon Boyd
as Judas Iscariot, Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child as Mary Magdalene, *NSYNC’s JC
Chasez as Pontius Pilate, John Rotten Lydon from Public Image Limited (PIL) and Sex Pistols as
King Herod, and introducing Ben Forster as Jesus.
Never before has Jesus Christ Superstar been seen on this massive scale with an intricate stage
featuring 197 custom-made decks that make up the 65’ x 60’ stage.
The Meyer Sound system creates a rock show environment with its state of the art distributed
audio system emitting over 500,000 watts of sound. The system is designed specifically for
maximum intelligibility, assuring audience members around the arena hear crisp sound as the
powerful music and vocals from the all-star cast takes center stage of this compelling story.
This visually enthralling production features custom lighting effects and video integration that
only an arena environment is able to provide. In Jesus Christ Superstar – Arena Spectacular,
both the high definition 60’ x 25’ video wall and lighting further the narrative of the story while
creating a rock concert experience. The custom video wall quickly draws the audience into the
story, displaying riveting visuals using 2.21 million LEDs that create over 281 trillion colors.
With the use of over 200 state of the art automated lighting instruments, the stage quickly
becomes a canvas for millions of colors enhancing the mood of each scene. The arena
environment allows for both large-scale effects with the entire arena washed in color and also
intimate moments enhanced with only one spotlight lighting a performer.
