SUMMARY OF GOALS – PRESIDENT AND VICE-PRESIDENTS – JULY 1, 2015 – JUNE 30, 2016 The key goals for the President and Vice-Presidents for the 2015/16 year are centered around the continued implementation of initiatives relating to Forward with Integrity, including supporting and promoting research excellence, strengthening graduate education and training, integrating research and community engagement into the undergraduate curriculum, developing the University’s partnerships at the local, national and international levels, and providing support to the academic mission via fundraising, advocacy and through flexible and integrated administrative processes. Other key initiatives focus on encouraging informed discussion of institutional issues such as resource distribution and the broader financial context for universities, supporting engagement and academically-informed discussion of global issues, and promoting key University values. NAME/POSITION Patrick Deane, President and Vice-Chancellor KEY GOALS FOR 2015-2016 Further develop the academic reforms envisaged by Forward with Integrity, including the integration of research and community engagement activities into the undergraduate curriculum, and the development of initiatives intended to further support and promote research excellence at McMaster, including the development of inter-Faculty and inter-Institutional partnerships. Continue to promote the academic, organizational, and personal values that underpin the mission of the University, including working to encourage respectful debate and supporting academically-informed discussion of major global issues. Focus on strengthening the University’s reputation by continuing to position McMaster as a major research-intensive University and a leader with regard to the thoughtful transformation of undergraduate education, and work in collaboration with the VicePresident (University Advancement) and members of the senior team to review and refine the McMaster brand. Consolidate the new administrative structure for internationalization and develop a strategic framework for international engagement, while also building upon the University’s relationships with the local community and fostering meaningful community-focused research, learning and service. Maximize the integration of major projects with the values of Forward with Integrity and encourage informed discussion about resource distribution within the University, as well as the broader and long-term financial context for post-secondary institutions. David Wilkinson, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) John Kelton, Dean and VicePresident (Health Sciences) Support the President in the implementation of FWI-based academic reform, including the implementation of the University’s Strategic Mandate Agreement and the development of new undergraduate and graduate programs as outlined in the SMA, and maintain the focus on excellence in research and graduate education. Develop the physical capacity of the campus to support enrolment growth through the conversion of underutilized space and the development of plans for the proposed Living-Learning Centre, and the development of an increased number of new online and blended learning courses. Enhance the recruitment and promotion of women faculty and ensure appropriate support is available for female faculty at all stages of their careers. Ensure the provision of increased faculty development opportunities, including orientation and support for new faculty and training for new Chairs and Directors. Support the implementation of initiatives intended to support and improve the student experience, including the newly developed mental health strategy and the integration of the Learning Portfolio into the curriculum. Monitor and adapt the McMaster budget model to optimize its effectiveness and refine the use of the University Fund to stimulate innovation in education and research, while supporting the Deans in addressing structural budget issues and enabling greater fiscal sustainability. Advance and align the educational program offerings in the Faculty of Health Sciences with Forward with Integrity, including the development of new program offerings, providing increased opportunities to students to engage with existing and emerging research priorities, and developing further professional development and continuing education opportunities for students and faculty. Facilitate and enhance cross-Faculty collaboration and cooperation, including developing the partnership with the DeGroote School of Business with regard to health leadership programming. Maintain and build upon the Faculty’s record of excellence in research to contribute to McMaster’s reputation as a research-intensive university. Continue to enhance capacity and build on the Faculty’s research strengths, including developing collaborative relationships with McMaster’s partner hospitals and establishing a commercialization agenda. Roger Couldrey, VicePresident (Administration) Mary Williams, VicePresident (University Advancement) Further advance the community and public engagement of the Faculty through the development of initiatives that benefit the local, provincial and national communities, and enhance the profile of McMaster and the Faculty nationally and internationally. Continue to work closely with the Provost and other members of the senior team to support and sustain the McMaster budget model and ERP system and ensure that the new system is fully integrated into Faculty processes. Build an infrastructure of facilities, systems and policies that allows the University to deliver on its strategic priorities in an efficient and flexible way, including the development of Mosaic into a sustainable set of business processes, and the simplification of administrative processes to increase flexibility and facilitate innovation. Build an effective administrative and ancillary leadership team to support the University’s academic and research mission and work in consultation with Faculties/Departments to establish appropriate benchmarks and KPIs, as well as a new service measurement tool for use across the Administration Division. Through continued responsible and sustainable financial management secure a solid foundation for the University’s academic mission, while working to raise awareness of the McMaster budget model, the process for resource distribution and the broader and long-term financial context for post-secondary institutions. Cultivate a positive and productive workplace through engagement initiatives, such as Employee Engagement Survey Action Plans and discussion forums, and the launch of employment equity and pay equity review programs. Oversee the project management of new construction projects to ensure that they are executed on a timely basis and within budget and continue to focus on the efficient use of resources, including utilities expenses and energy management. Continue to promote and advance McMaster’s standing as a major research-intensive university, and as a leader with regard to the transformation of undergraduate education with donors, government and alumni and, in collaboration with the President and members of the senior team, work to review and refine the McMaster brand. Provide support through fundraising, strategic communications, government relations and alumni engagement to advance the University’s path of academic reform based on the key recommendations of Forward with Integrity. Continue to support the ongoing integration of major projects, such as the Mosaic ERP project and the McMaster budget model, with Forward with Integrity, and support the success of those projects through the implementation of strategic communication plans and awareness-raising initiatives. Continue to build a strong and collegial University Advancement leadership team, focused on supporting the long-term success of the institution. Support the President in promoting the academic, organizational, and personal values that underpin the mission of the University, including supporting the reputation of the institution though a values-based approach to issues management.
