AUDUBON NEW MEXICO’S OUTDOOR SCIENCE PROGRAMS: 1st -5th Grade
SANTA FE PUBLIC SCHOOLS SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS: 2015-2016
Dear Teachers:
Audubon New Mexico continues to strive to serve your needs, your students, and the community of Santa Fe. We
hope to work hard with you to support your classroom science curriculum and standards, connect students to nature
and provide a unique, educational outdoor learning experience. We effectively illustrate science concepts through
direct contact with the natural world at the Randall Davey Audubon Center & Sanctuary. With support of the City of
Santa Fe’s Children and Youth Commission we are pleased to be able to offer a number of program and
transportation scholarships for outdoor field science programs at our 135 acre wildlife sanctuary and surrounding
property.




If you are a 1st or 5th grade teacher, you may apply for funding, however our main grant is specific to 2nd –
4th grade programming.
The 4th grade will be offered our 4-day, Ecosystem Explorations Field Studies program to better emphasize,
and build on the state standards and support the Northern New Mexico Inquiry Science Education Consortium
program. (Application for the 4th grade program begins on page 8)
If a scholarship is awarded we kindly request a letter after your program to share with funders
detailing why this experience was important for your students and to share some stories to encourage
future funding for classes. If we do not receive a letter by the end of the school year, it will affect your
funding in future years.
Application specifics:
o If you are not chosen this year, please understand that each year we have an extensive waitlist; we
work to offer as many of those teachers programs in the following years. If additional funds become
available we will offer programming to teachers on the waitlist.
o Scholarship recipients will be chosen based on their explanation of how they intend to integrate
Audubon’s Outdoor Science program into their curriculum and the need for science education in their
classroom. Scholarships will not be decided on a first-come, first-serve basis but reviewed carefully by
staff until all available scholarships are filled.
o We encourage all interested parties to apply as soon as possible. We will be accepting applications
through the end of September.
o If possible, we would like to serve classes from the same school and grade level in the same week
to assist Aububon’s funding commitments and scheduling.
o Teachers selected to receive a scholarship will be awarded $130 bus stipend by mail within 45 days of
your program date.
We are happy to answer questions either by phone or email at RDACeducation@auduobn.org
or call 505-983-4609 and ask for Samantha Funk, ext. 21.
IMPORTANT: All program costs for 2nd -4th are paid for by the CITY OF SANTA FE’S CHILDREN
AND YOUTH COMMISSION, including bus stipends to help cover transportation costs.

AUDUBON NEW MEXICO’S 3-HOUR OUTDOOR SCIENCE PROGRAM SERIES, 1St – 5th GRADE
WHAT IS THE AUDUBON CENTER’S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM?
This scholarship provides SFPS teachers with FREE outdoor science enrichment opportunities and a transportation
stipend to help cover costs to our Center for your classroom!
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP?
All classes in grades 1st-5th from the following schools are eligible: Amy Biehl, Aspen, Cesar Chavez, Chaparral,
E.J. Martinez, El Camino Real, Gonzales, Kearny, Nava, Nina Otero, Pinon, Ramirez-Thomas, Salazar, Sweeney,
Tesuque, and Turquoise Trail. If interested, please fill out the application included in this packet. Field trips can be
scheduled any Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If you would like to request a slightly altered
schedule due to known bus delays please specify that on your application. Due to our philosophy of hands-on
learning in the outdoors, we typically schedule only one class participating at a time at the Audubon Center.
WHAT ARE THE PROGRAM OPTIONS?
Scholarship recipients will work with Audubon in a variety of ways. If you are a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 5th grade teacher, you
are eligible for three individual instructional activities with Audubon’s educators. These include a fall and spring 3hour field visit to the Audubon Center and a 1.5 hour winter program in your classroom.
You may choose from our menu of topics to compliment your curriculum. Our brochure can be viewed at
http://nm.audubon.org. We have suggested fall and spring programs that correspond to each grade level, but it may
be possible to switch programs between seasons. Audubon’s Outdoor Science programs can be used to introduce,
reinforce, or wrap up your life science units. The winter in-class topic is “All about Birds,” and includes hands-on
activities to introduce and reinforce concepts of adaptation, bird behavior, and conservation.
HOW TO APPLY:
Please fill out the attached application form. Don’t forget to fill out the Needs Assessment at the bottom of the
application. If applying for your whole grade level, please utilize the supplemental forms for each additional
classroom and include them together when applying. Don’t forget to save your completed application to your
desktop and email a copy back to RDACeducation@audubon.org. Applying early is encouraged! For
questions please contact our Education Department at 505.983.4609 or email RDACeducation@audubon.org.
APPLICATION SELECTION CRITERIA:
o Scholarship recipients will be chosen based on their explanation in the needs assessment of how they
intend to integrate Audubon’s Outdoor Science program into their curriculum and the need for science
education in their classroom.
o Scholarships will not be decided on a first-come, first-serve basis but reviewed carefully by staff based
on integration and need since our scholarship availability is limited to a certain number.
CONFIRMATION OF PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP: If your application is chosen, you will receive a
confirmation document and a contract from Audubon. Once your program is confirmed, YOU, the teacher,
must schedule both your fall and spring buses through the school’s transportation department ASAP to ensure
you have a bus for your field programs. You will receive your class’s $130 bus stipend by mail within 45 days of
your program date.
