Discussion Items

2012-13 Scholarship Awards

→ Rachael reported that 1,250 scholarships were awarded to student for the 12/13 academic year. The total amount awarded from scholarships, internships, and program awards was valued at more than $1.3 million.

→ She and Kris reviewed new scholarship awards since the last committee meeting, most notably the new

$5 million anonymous contribution. As a result, $175,000 will be added to the scholarship distribution.

New programs from this gift include: the SRJC Teaching Fellows Program, the Pell Continuation Grant,

Transferring Scholarships, and a Completion Incentive Award (in developmental stages).

→ Another notable contribution of $400,000 from the estate of Leona Dixon Lisignoli and Reno Lisignoli will result in scholarship awards for vocational students, specifically those in the wastewater treatment program, the Police Officer Academy – Intensive Program, and SRT’s vocational programs (stage craft, costuming, and make-up). Bev offered that the Fire Academy/ Fire Academy Internships are also an area of need. Bev agreed to send a list of programs/departments that require their students to complete an internship.

→ The Barnhart Herbarium Pepperwood Internship fund was recently established and has a fund balance of

$48,000. Bev said that her department can assist students with the internship units and offered that it is often best for them to enroll in these units as many of their programs require that they complete internship units.

Osher & Osher/Lahm Awards

→ Kris provided background information on The Bernard Osher Foundation’s matching gift. In May 2008,

The Osher Foundation made a pledge to the California Community Colleges, giving an unprecedented lead gift of $25 million to establish the endowment ( Osher Awards ), and committing another $25 million in match dollars for up to $50 million raised by the system ( the Osher/Lahm Awards were created by this match ). SRJC was the first college in the system to meet their allotted match dollars due to the generosity of the Estate of Fred Lahm and the agreement of his brother, Charles Lahm.

In 2011/12 $18,000 for the Osher Awards and $43,000 was available for Osher/Lahm Awards.

In 2012/13 $21,000 for Osher Awards and $70,000 for Osher/Lahm Awards.

2012-13 Bridging the Doyle Scholarship Program

→ Rachael reported that 203 BTD scholarships were awarded for a total of $101,500.

2013-14 Doyle Scholarship Program

→ Rachael reported that the Scholarship Office is preparing for the return of the Doyle Scholarship

Program. Distributions from the Doyle Trust will result in Doyle Scholarships for the 2013-14 year.

According to the Sonoma County Junior College District Board of Trustees policy, the Doyle fund balance will be reviewed in December 2012, to plan awards for the 2013-14 year. Upcoming high school graduates (class of 2013) with a 3.0 unweighted GPA will be able to submit an application between January 3 and March 11, 2013 for Doyle Scholarships for the 2013-14 academic year at

SRJC. Criteria and applications will be available on the SRJC Scholarship Office website on January 3,
