Hungarian legends The Hungarian history is rich in legends. All of them was important in the medieval hungarian people’s life, but some of them bear a good character nowadays as well. Most of the stories were born in the 9th and 10th century, this was the period of the Hungarian’s roaming and the time of the settlement in the Carpathian Basin. The legends almost always contain religious subjects and these are often telling a story about Hungarian saints becouse the Christian church had been connected to them. The most famous are the followings: The magic deer (A csodaszarvas) The dream of Emese (Emese álma) Blood-contract (Vérszerződés) The horn of Lehel (Lehel kürtje) The Hungarian blessed crown (A magyar szent korona) The legend of Saint-László (Szent László legendája) The legend of Saint-Margit (Szent Margit legendája) The Echo of Tihany (A tihanyi vízhang) The magic deer - The story of the Hungarian nation and their settling In the beginning of the story there is a big land in the far east. The Lord of the land called Nimród who is the father of two young brave and strong boy Hunor (the Huns) and Magor (magyarok = the Hungarians). One day the two boy went to hunting as they always did with 100-100 brave hunter, but in this hunting they saw a beautiful white deer. They wanted to catch the deer, so they started to chase it. The big team were running all day, but every night they lost the deer and the day after it showed again. This running continued for days until they found a delightful place (carpathian basin). The chaseing showed the migration of the Hungarians trought the steppe. In this beautiful place that was full of lakes ands big trees the magic deer dissapeared forever, but Hunor and Magor saw a group of ladies one more beutiful than the other, they were singing right at the place where the deer dissapeared. Hunor and Magor’s eyes met just like the other men’s. Hunor and Magor pulled up those girls to their saddles who were dancing in the centre of the circle. The two men get married to Dul king’s daughters. This part tellss the settlement. Hunor and his 100 men’s descedants became the Huns and Magor and his 100 men’s descedants became the Hungarians. The echo of Tihany Tihany, the mountains' magnificent, golden-haired fairy sang in every night. Balaton, the lord of the waters lived in the deep of the lake in his tent, the columns is decorated of which genuine pearls a thousand. The only son of Balaton, who lived with his father there in the depth of the waters, Tihany heard his song some times, so he rose onto the surface, that in detail let him be allowed to hear the wonderful sound. – Don’t listen Tihany tempter's sound, – Balaton warned his son. Tihany realised that everybody likes his song, for all songs sung if they pay by diamond only later because of this. Beneath the lake the only son of Balaton got sick on deep one's. Implored his father: – Let me hear Tihany's beautiful sound one more time, I hope I am cured by him certainly. Old Balaton collected a punt truth pearl and when Tihany came down in the evening his goats to drink onto the coast of the lake, carried up the treasures to it. Tihany liked the pearls and sang for them. But from this evening Balaton must come to Tihany with a sack treasure because Tihany didn’t sang without gift. All of the treasure of Balaton ran out finally, Tihany didn’t sang. The son of Balaton died. They buried him deeply into Badacsony mountain. The revenge of Balaton was terrible. The lord of the waters caught sight of Badacsony coffin up there some times, his mourning and his pain occurred to him and stirred up the water of the lake in his anger. An evening strong waves sprang up. The scared Tihany ran away from the blows of the waves into a cave. Balaton was shaken down there, the mountain stirred and the mouth of the cave was burying in rock landslide, walling Tihany up. Balaton sowed a curse on the beautiful fairy: – From a punishment anybody join the discussion about you starting henceforth, repeat all of his words seven times! The Tihany echo is there today, his rock prison and his beautiful sound repeats all words. Blood-contract The blood-contract was taken by the 7 big leader of the Hungarians before the statehood of Hungary. All the leaders got around in a tent when two revered men appeared with a sword and a bowl both of these were Attila’s Attila the hun’s. A lot of people were waiting for the leaders of the 7 tribe. After long hours one man called Álmos came to the front of the crowd and said that It’s the time to get back our nation’s land, the land of Attila, but the law says that the nations need to have the same blood, so the 7 tribe will become 1 nation with one leader as in the time of Attila. Álmos told to everybody that they chose Árpád as the main leader who was Áloms’s son. The People celabrated the new chief, when the other revered man the táltos called the 7 leader to him. All of them cut their hands with the sword and distilled their blood to the bowl, the last one was Árpád. The táltos poured wine to the bowl and gave itt o the 7 men and they drank one gulp and Árpád was the last one. So the 7 tribe took an oath to Árpád as the only leader of the Nation.
