SCHOOL-WIDE BEHAVIORAL
EXPECTATIONS
The staff and community of Running Springs Elementary School are dedicated to
providing a quality education which will empower all students to achieve academic
success, embrace life-long learning, and become productive citizens. Students, as
Redhawks, are expected to be safe, demonstrate outstanding effort, accept
responsibility for their actions and respect others at all times.

Encouraging Student Use of School-wide Behavioral Expectations
In order to encourage students to follow school-wide behavioral expectations, the following
programs continue to be implemented to acknowledge students who are safe, demonstrating
outstanding effort, accepting responsibility, or are respectful to others.
Redhawk Tickets- Students earn tickets for good citizenship that is displayed in the classroom and
on the playground. Teachers and supervisors recognize students who are safe, demonstrating
outstanding effort, accepting responsibility, or are respectful to others. Tickets are used for a
chance drawing each week where prizes are awarded. Photos of several Redhawk Ticket recipients
are displayed on the bulletin board in the office.
Merit Coupons- Students earn coupons for outstanding academic achievement and/or
improvement. Students who have earned 15 coupons are invited to participate in an additional
recess. A Merit Coupon recess is scheduled four times a year.
Award Assemblies- The following awards will be presented at these assemblies:
Student Achievement Awards- Several students from each class are awarded a certificate for
outstanding achievement or improvement in academics or citizenship. Certificates are awarded at
award assemblies at the end of each trimester.
Student of the Month Awards- Each month one student per class is awarded a certificate for
outstanding overall academic achievement and citizenship. Certificates are awarded at award
assemblies at the end of each trimester. Student photos are displayed on the bulletin board in the
office.
Honor Roll- Gold, Silver, and Bronze Honor Roll is determined by grade point averages (G.P.A.).
Honor Roll is only awarded in grades 4-6. An evening ceremony is held at the end of each trimester.
Gold Honor Roll: 4.0 G.P.A.
Silver Honor Roll: 3.5-3.99 G.P.A.
Bronze Honor Roll: 3.0-3.49 G.P.A.
Grade point averages are calculated on a 4 point scale:

B-3
C-2
D-1
S.O.A.R. Pins- Redhawk pins are earned by students who demonstrate the greatest growth in
Reading Comprehension. The Scholastic Reading Inventory (S.R.I.) is a computerized assessment
that students in grades 2-6 take each quarter. Three pins per class are awarded to students who
improve their overall S.R.I. score and lexile level each trimester.
Redhawk Readers-Students are recognized for completing Reading Counts quizzes. Student names
are displayed on the library bulletin board for reading books and completing designated
comprehension quizzes.
Discouraging Violations of School-wide Behavioral Expectations
Minor Infractions on the Playground
Students who do not follow Running Springs Elementary School-wide Behavioral Expectations will
receive consequences and parents will be notified with a pink slip that must be signed and returned.
The procedures listed below are for minor playground infractions that occur:

Minor Infractions in the Classroom
All minor infractions that occur in the classroom are handled by the classroom teacher. Each teacher
follows a management system that is specific to the needs of each class. Teachers review the class
management system and classroom behavior expectations with parents at Back-to School Night.
Serious Infractions
All serious infractions, whether they occur in the classroom or on the playground, are immediately
referred to the Principal. Pink slips are not given for serious infractions. Appropriate action is taken by
the administrator, consequences are assigned, and parents are notified. Serious infractions include, but
are not limited to:
 Fighting
 Bullying
 Intentional injury to another person
 Profanity
 Defiance
 Property damage, vandalism
 Cheating
 Stealing
School Procedures
Arrival
1. Students in grades 1-6 may arrive at 7:45 a.m. and enter Gate 3 on the north side of the
Multipurpose Room. No student may arrive before 7:45 since supervision is not provided until
this time. Upper grade students are to line up and prepare to enter classrooms at 8:00 a.m.
Primary students are to proceed directly to the lunch tables and may not walk through the
hallways or enter classrooms. There is no supervision in the hallways or in the classrooms at
this time. Teachers will walk primary students to the line-up area. Primary students will line up
and enter classrooms at 8:05 a.m. Adults may not enter the school grounds through this gate.
Volunteers must check in at the office.
2. Kindergarten students wait outside of Gate 1 near the office. At 7:55 a.m. teachers will open
the gate, meet students and direct them to the line-up area/classroom. Only kindergarten
students and students in Rooms 103, 104, 107 and 110 may enter through this gate. Adults may
not enter the school grounds through this gate. Volunteers must check in at the office.
3. Cars may not drop off at Gate 1. Parents must either walk kindergarten students in or drop off
at Gate 3.
4. Students do not run or play in front of the school.
5. Students may not go home for books or homework once they have arrived at school.
Dismissal
1. Kindergarten students will be dismissed at 2:10 p.m. Parents may wait outside of Gate 1 and
teachers will walk students out to parents.
2. Students in grades 1-3 will be dismissed at 2:15 p.m., and students in grades 4-6 will be
dismissed at 2:25 p.m. Parents must wait outside the gates.
3. Students may wait at the benches outside of the green gates for a sibling or for a ride. Students
may also wait on the sidewalk next to the office for a ride. Students may not wait at the
benches in front of the office. There is no supervision at this location.
4. Students may not walk through the metal gate or down the slope that is located in front of the
office. The slope and decorative rocks are slippery and dangerous.
5. All students must be picked up by 2:30 p.m. There is no supervision after this time.
Dismissal Modified Wednesdays and Minimum Days
1. Students in Kindergarten will be dismissed at 12:15 p.m.
2. Students in grades 1-6 will be dismissed at 12:25 p.m.
Buying and Selling – Students are not allowed to either buy or sell any item from another student while
coming to school, while at school, or while leaving school.
Drop Off Items
1. Place all late lunches in the “Late Lunch Box” located next to the parent sign- in table in the
office. Please label all lunches with your child’s name, grade and teacher. A noon supervisor
will take the box out to the lunch area. It is your child’s responsibility to look for his/her lunch in
the box.
2. Other items (such as homework, books, snacks, etc.) must also be labeled with your child’s
name, grade and teacher. When possible, primary students will be notified that the item is in
the office. Upper grade students will not be notified in class, but are directed to check in the
office during their recess time for the item that they have forgotten.
Lunch/Snack Procedures
1. GUM IS NOT ALLOWED AT SCHOOL.
2. Students in grades 1-6 are to eat their recess snacks at the lunch tables.
3. All students will be expected to follow the procedures arranged for buying hot lunches and/or
milk.
4. During the lunch period, students are to eat at their assigned table.
5. Students are to eat their own food; trading is discouraged.
6. Students are to remain at the lunch tables until dismissed by the noon duty supervisor.
7. Students are to place their trash in trash cans when leaving the lunch area after they are
dismissed by the noon duty supervisor.
8. A student must get verbal permission from the supervisor if he/she needs to leave the lunch
table before the regular dismissal time.
9. No food is allowed on the playground.
10. Students are not allowed to use microwave ovens in the lunch area or classrooms to heat food
items.
11. Glass bottles are not allowed at school.
12. Fast food is not to be purchased for groups of students unless there is a prearranged classroom
party.
13. School phones may not be used for take-out or delivery lunches for students.
14. All late lunches must be brought to the office and placed in the “late lunch box.”
Electronic Devices
1. Devices, including but not limited to, laser pointers, iPods, iPads, hand held electronic games,
and other such items are not to be brought to school.
2. Cell phones are for emergency use only. They must be turned off during school hours and
stored in a backpack. If they are in use during the school day, they will be confiscated and held
for parent pick up.
Leaving Campus
1. Students do not leave the school grounds during the school day without checking through the
office.
2. Students are not allowed to use school phones to get permission to go home with another
student. Arrangements must be made prior to the start of the school day.
Lost and Found
1. Lost and found is located in the MPR. Please label all lunch boxes, sweaters, and jackets for easy
identification.
2. At the end of each quarter, all clothing not claimed by the owner in the Lost and Found will be
donated to charity.
Medicine
Students may never bring any kind of medicine to school. Parents may bring medicine to the
Health Office, but a medication form signed by your doctor is required.
Office
1. Except in emergencies, students are to have an “office pass” or a note from the
teacher/supervisor to enter the office.
2. Students are not to be in the staff lounges or the teacher’s work room before, during or after
school.
3. Students are not allowed to buy sodas from the machines in the office.
4. The office telephone is used only with written permission from the teacher.
Parent Check-In
1. Parents must check in at the office for all before school meetings and conferences.
2. Parents, volunteers, and visitors must sign in and sign out at the office during the school day and
wear a visitor’s badge.
Playground Safety
1. All students must play in designated playground areas only. Students are never to play between
or behind the portable classrooms.
2. FREEZE BELL – Students stop playing immediately when the bell rings and freeze. Students walk
to lines after the whistle blows. If on the grass, students may run to the edge of the blacktop
and walk the rest of the way to their line.
3. Students are to get drinks and go to the restroom before the bell rings.
4. Problems on the playground are reported to the teacher on duty or the noon supervisor.
5. Students must get permission from the teacher on duty or the noon supervisor to come to the
office.
6. Students must stay away from classes that are in session at recess and lunch.
7. No students are allowed in the halls during recess or lunch.
8. Students help keep the school grounds clean by putting all litter in the trash cans.
9. No cutting in line. A student only has one place in line. If he gives someone his place – in front
or in back of him – he goes to the end of the line.
10. Students are not to sit or stand on any walls or fences, on water fountains, on landscaping, or in
any trees while at school.
Student Check-Out
1. If your child has an appointment during the school day, come into the office to sign him/her out.
2. Your child will be called out of class and meet you in the office.
3. Students that return to school on the same day must be signed in by an adult.
School Safety
1. Students are not to bring any toy or real weapon (gun, knife, and martial arts instruments),
bullets, or explosive to school under any conditions.
2. Fighting, wrestling, or martial arts display, whether real or fake, is not allowed. No “play
fighting” allowed.
3. No throwing of rocks, sand, sticks and/or harmful objects.
4. Students have a responsibility to tell another adult if there is a knife or other weapon, fireworks
or other dangerous object on campus.
5. Students have a responsibility to tell an adult if someone has made a threat against them or
another student.
Transportation
1. Bus- Students are responsible to the bus driver for their behavior on the bus. Students arriving
by bus will walk directly to the playground before school. After school, students are to line up at
the curb in front of the Multipurpose Room. Bus citations given for inappropriate behavior may
result in the suspension of bus privileges.
2. Bicycle- Students in grades 3-6 are allowed to ride a bicycle to school. Students must follow city
bicycle rules which include wearing a helmet. Students who come to school without a helmet
will not be allowed to ride home. Bicycle riders cross at intersections or crosswalks and walk
their bikes across the street. Bikes are never ridden on school grounds or brought onto the
playground or into the school corridors. Upon entering the school parking lot, bikes must be
walked to the bike racks and locked. Students who ride recklessly or double may lose the
privilege of riding a bike to school.
3. Scooters- Students in grades 3-6 are allowed to ride a scooter to school. Students must follow
city traffic rules which include wearing a helmet. Students who come to school without a
helmet will not be allowed to ride home. Scooters are never ridden on school grounds or
brought onto the playground or into the school corridors. Upon entering the school parking lot,
scooters must be walked to the bike racks and locked. Students who ride recklessly may lose
the privilege of riding a scooter to school.
4. Skateboards, motorized scooters, roller blades or roller skates are not allowed on campus at any
time.
5. Car- Please park in marked stalls only. Parking/stopping along the red curb or on the yellow
diagonal lines is not permitted. Please keep all crosswalks and bus loading zones clear. No
parking or stopping in front of the office at any time.
6. Walking- Students are responsible to the school for their actions on the way to and from school.
Fighting, teasing, and vandalism are not tolerated.
