Warwick Public Schools Class of 2014 - Topic Proposal Letter Guidelines for Event Planning Senior Exhibition Project is your chance to apply what you have already learned in a real world situation. Your project will afford you the opportunity to select a topic that interests you. These guidelines will help you through the process of writing your proposal letter to gain approval for your topic. Once your letter is approved by the GBP coordinator you will then conduct thesis driven research supported by valid sources. Please choose a topic that will allow you to create an appropriate product, which is an application of what you have learned. Please remember to: 1. Type and single-space your letter using Times New Roman, 12-point font. 2. Use Block Style for your letter. SEE THE SAMPLE PROPOSAL LETTER (Appendix A). 3. Answer ALL of the questions found below using complete sentences. 4. Submit the completed proposals via the “Light Bulb Icon” Located in the Senior Project area of First Class. Be sure to attach the proposal as a document using the paper clip or attach option – do not copy/paste the proposal into the body of the email. A. Introductory Paragraph(s): A1. What type of event are you going to plan? A2. What knowledge, experience(s), and/or skill(s) do you already have related to this event? Be specific and include any work experience, classes, and/or training related to this topic. A3. An educational learning stretch is the knowledge and skills that you gain from completing your Senior Exhibition Project. This does not include learning to make a PowerPoint, writing a research paper, and/or performing an oral presentation. What do you think your learning stretch will be? Why is it a learning stretch? A4. What civic or social benefit will your event have? B. Body Paragraph(s): B1. Research is the foundation of the entire Senior Exhibition Project. Where will you begin researching information concerning the benefit of your event? For example, if you are raising money for muscular dystrophy. You might research the causes, symptoms, and cures of muscular dystrophy so that you have a better understanding about for what you are raising money. You should refer to your summer pre-search to answer these questions. B2. What expertise are you looking for in your interviewee? B3. What aspect(s) of your research do you plan to explore in your interview? B4. What aspect(s) of your product do you plan to explore in your interview? C. Concluding Paragraph(s): C1. Your product should show your ability to use what you have learned from your research and interview. What skills from your research and your interview do you think you will use to successfully plan your event? C2. If your event is a recurring event, it must contain a new student-generated component to demonstrate your effect on the event. What is the new component that you will add to the recurring event? If the event is new, please state that in this paragraph. IMPORTANT NOTES: Letters that do not follow the guidelines outlined above and/or topics not approved will be returned for revision. You must submit a revised proposal to the GBP Coordinator before changing any component of the proposal during the project. If you choose to employ a mentor, (1) you need to replace the word “interviewee” with “mentor” in parts B2, B3, and B4; and (2) your mentor is also required to get a National and State of RI BCI. Warwick Public Schools SAMPLE SENIOR PROJECT EVENT PLANNING PROPOSAL LETTER 1010 Smith Street Warwick, RI _____ Current Data (Student home address - Current Date - Hit enter 4 times after year) Chip McGair GBP Coordinator Warwick Veterans Memorial High School 2314 West Shore Road Warwick, RI 02889 (Hit enter 2 times after zip code) Dear Dr. McGair: My senior project is on planning an event to support Leukemia (A1). I selected this topic because someone very close to me has this disease and I would like to do something to create awareness about it while also helping to support it financially. (A2) I have been to different fundraiser events for Leukemia but I have never participated in planning any of them. (A2) I would like to be able to learn more about what causes the disease and if it would be possible to eventually find a cure with more intense research. (A2) This project will be an educational and emotional learning stretch for me (A3). This is a learning stretch for me because I know very little about Leukemia (A3). I want to understand the science behind this disease and what treatments are available (A3). By educating myself and my peers, I hope to be able to help my friend and others who have this disease (A4). Under the direction of my interviewee, I hope to hold an event in my school to raise awareness about this disease while also raising money to support the research that is needed to hopefully someday find a cure. (A4) The focus of my research will be on the science behind the disease and its impact on one’s health (B1). In working with my interviewee, I hope to learn the “human” aspect of this disease that one cannot get in research alone (B3). As a result of the interview process, I hope to create and collect data from patient surveys (B4). From these surveys, I hope to learn how people found out that they had the disease, what treatments they follow, and how their quality of life has changed while living with this disease (B4). I also plan to ask my interviewee about the organizational and planning skills required to hold a fundraiser event and what some possibilities might be for having one at my school. My product will be an event (C1). I will hold a fundraising event at my school such as a teacher-student volleyball game (C1). Through the email interview process, my interviewee will provide me with the steps necessary to prepare me to run this event on my own to ensure it is manageable and successful (C1). In addition to booking a date, time, and location for the event, I will need to advertise so people will attend (C1). I will create a flyer to advertise the event and place it throughout the school (C1). Next, I will conduct a confidential survey with various patients who have different types of Leukemia (C1). I will use the results to guide me in creating an informational brochure that should be both helpful and easy to understand that I will pass out during my event (C1). My goal is to provide patients and their families with this brochure so they know what treatments and support services are available. Sincerely, Student’s Name
