YUROK TRIBE-JOB DESCRIPTION Road Maintenance Laborer Job Title: Road Maintenance Laborer Pay Grade Trainee Apprentice Journeyman Department Watershed Program Road Location Klamath/Tully Department Area Maintenance Creek Reports To: Project Coordinator FLSA Status Non Exempt ALL HIRING IS SUBJECT TO THE YUROK TRIBE’S HIRING PREFERENCE Salary Range (T) $15.16/(A) $17.45/(J)$21.20 SUMMARY: Road Maintenance Laborer is under the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator and will assist with road maintenance/repair project(s), watershed restoration project(s) or demolition project(s) by performing a variety of semi-skilled and manual work while operating departmental equipment. Funding for this position comes from three sources, annually applied for allocations or tribal and/or grant contract and annual agreement funds is based on annual allocation of tribal and/or grant contract funds. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following is used as a partial description and is not restrictive as to duties required.) 1. Repair roads and road surfaces cleaning catch basins, culverts, drainage systems and other associated maintenance duties. 2. Raking, dumping, spreading, grading, and rolling of gravel, rock, and other road surface material. 3. Mowing the roadside, cutting, chipping, and removing brush, trees and shrubs. 4. Repairing damaged signs. 5. Plowing snow and all other maintenance, care, upkeep, repair, and/or beautification projects. 6. Assists in resurfacing, oiling, patching, and constructing roads and related structures. 7. Operates dump and water trucks of all sizes. 8. Operates front-end loaders in loading trucks, cleaning culverts, and clearing roadways. 9. Performs manual work such as patching, burning weeds, and other roadside maintenance. 10. Operates a variety of light and moderately heavy equipment in clearing roadways, pushing gravel and earth. 11. Lifts and moves heavy objects. 12. Loads stone, gravel, dirt, trash and other materials, and dumps and unloads trucks. Performs pick and shovel work in digging, widening and backfilling trenches and other excavations. 14. Maintain and assist in the use and care of tools and equipment. 15. Responsible for doing some light preventive maintenance and repair work on machinery such as adjusting brakes, repairing minor electrical systems and greasing of equipment. 16. May be required to make “parts” run to town to reduce down time. 17. Required to assist the department in emergency and crisis circumstances associated with road maintenance matters. 18. Responsible for collecting accurate field data. 19. Hiking up and down steep terrain, hauling necessary equipment is required. 20. Assisting equipment operators as necessary. 21. Ability to follow proper methods, procedures and safety precautions. Must demonstrate ability to operate road maintenance equipment (physical operations test). 8. Must have First Aid/CPR certification, or attain prior to employment, and obtain annually. 9. Erect and dismantle restricted height scaffolding. 10. Use demolition tools and equipment. 11. Carry out manual and mechanical general demolition. 12. Construct and dismantle fences and gates. Apprentice: Meet all Trainee level requirement, additional 2080 hours of experience and pass a skills test to validate experience. Journeyman: Meet all Apprentice level requirements plus an additional 2080 hours of experience and pass a skills test to validate experience. SPECIAL SKILLS: Knowledge of: 1. Operation, care, minor adjustment and repair of graders, dozers, and other heavy duty road maintenance equipment; 2. Road maintenance and construction tools, methods, materials, and safety operations; AND Ability to: 1. Skillfully operate all types of assigned machinery in rough terrain, steep slope areas and possible heavy snow conditions; 2. Detect needed mechanical work and make minor adjustments; 3. Work any required hours during snow removal operations, and/or respond to disasters or emergencies. WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the essential functions, the employee is exposed to work which may be conducted under adverse weather conditions including: rain, fog, wind, and moderately cold or hot temperatures; and to construction equipment and debris, fumes, odors, airborne particles and dust. The employee is occasionally exposed to the possibility of bodily injury. The employee will work in and around ongoing construction, in high, precarious places, and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is required to drive and to operate heavy equipment in all weather conditions. The employee is required to wear safety equipment to perform some of the functions of this job. There are frequent interruptions and multiple demands. All applicants will acknowledge and follow all Yurok Tribe personnel and other policies and procedures. Must be at least 21 years of age. Position requires stamina and sufficient physical ability and dexterity to accomplish field-work that may include strenuous exertion, mounting and dismounting of machinery, and long hours in the field. Requires physical exertion such as hiking in terrain that is steep, wet, rough, uneven or rocky areas covered with debris, brush is dense and difficult to walk through, and poison oak is common. When necessary must be able to lift 50+ pounds. A valid CDL and ability to pass tribal insurance eligibility is favorable. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must have the ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. With ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Knowledge of Yurok language is preferred but not required. REASONING ABILITY: Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and/or diagram form. With ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk and hear.
