Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution
in the Holy Cross tradition,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
I hope you and your family had a blessed Thanksgiving and
that you enjoyed a period of relaxation.
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school
in the Holy Cross tradition,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
Father Munshower is recovering from his surgery and is in
rehabilitation at Community East Hospital. At this time, he is
in no pain from his back and is beginning to walk with his boot for
his broken ankle. Today, using modern technology, we called him before prayer, and using a speaker phone, he was able
to lead Morning Prayer for all of us. Please continue to pray for his healing. We hope he can be back with us after second
semester begins.
Our football team’s success in winning the 4A State Championship will be honored at our All-School Mass on
Thursday, December 8th. These student-athletes celebrated a Mass before every game and prayed the
rosary, so it is appropriate that they be honored on this Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Our liturgy will
be from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. in the Robert V. Welch Student Activity Center. If you are able to join us, we would
be delighted to have you do so!
Our Mothers’ Club would like to request that a as many as possible of our Freshman Parents
please donate two dozen cookies or brownies for the Sophomore Ring ceremony on Sunday,
December 4th. They can be delivered here to school at the front desk on Thursday or Friday, December
1st and 2nd. If you have questions, please contact Shannon Fox @ twomanyfox@sbcglobal.net for the
answers.
The Climate Audit Survey that I had mentioned previously for sophomore and senior students and parents has
been postponed until sometime after the first of the year. I will let you know more about this soon.

interested, please see Father to set a time.

grade. Please check with each teacher to determine the individual policies.

Walking Safely on Ice
Walking to and from parking lots or between buildings at work during the winter requires special attention to avoid slipping
and falling. Slips and falls are some of the most frequent types of injuries that the Employee Safety Committee sees —
especially during the winter months.
No matter how well the snow and ice is removed from parking lots or sidewalks, pedestrians will still encounter some
slippery surfaces when walking outdoors in the winter. It is important for everyone to be constantly aware of these dangers
and to learn to walk safely on ice and slippery surfaces.
It is recommended to keep these important safety tips in mind:
Walking Over Ice





In cold temperatures, approach with caution and assume that all wet, dark areas on pavements are slippery and icy.
Dew or water vapor can freeze on cold surfaces, forming an extra-thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that can look like
a wet spot on the pavement.
Walk in designated walkways as much as possible. Taking shortcuts over snow piles and other frozen areas can be
hazardous. Look ahead when you walk; a snow- or ice-covered sidewalk or driveway, especially if on a hill, may
require travel along its grassy edge for traction.
If you must walk in the street, walk against the flow of traffic, as close to the curb as you can.
Taking shortcuts through areas where snow and ice removal is not feasible can be hazardous. Try to avoid straying
from the beaten path.
Point your feet out slightly like a penguin! Spreading your feet out slightly
while walking on
ice increases your center of gravity.
8








Bend slightly and walk flat-footed with your center of gravity directly over the feet as much as possible.
Extend your arms out to your sides to maintain balance. Beware if you are carrying a heavy backpack or other
load—your sense of balance will be off.
If you must carry a load, try not to carry too much; leave your hands and arms free to balance yourself.
Keep your hands out of your pockets. Hands in your pockets while walking decreases your center of gravity and
balance. You can help break your fall with your hands free if you do start to slip.
Watch where you are stepping and GO S-L-O-W-L-Y! This will help your reaction time to changes in traction.
When walking on steps, always use the hand railings and plant your feet firmly on each step.
Use special care when entering and exiting vehicles; use the vehicle for support.
Take short steps or shuffle for stability. It also helps to stop occasionally to break momentum.

Tuition Assistance for 2012-2013
Families with students returning for 10th, 11th and/or 12th grade next year and who are interested in applying for
tuition assistance for next year can begin to do so as of November 1 and should apply by
February 15, 2012. The Enrollment Management Office recently mailed information about this process
10
to families who received need-based tuition assistance during the current school year, but families can learn more by
visiting www.gocathedral.com/tuition.
Also, there are a few key changes to the process for next year that impact returning families:
 In the case of parents who are divorced or legally separated, Cathedral now requires each household to complete
the process.
 Families now submit tax documentation directly to School & Student Services for Financial Aid (SSS) instead of to
Cathedral.
 Families will receive tuition assistance awards at the time of re-enrollment (April).
Important tuition assistance dates are as follows:
 November 1—Earliest date to apply for tuition assistance for 2012-2013 (http://sss.nais.org)
 December 31—Deadline for applying for tuition assistance for incoming 9th graders (Class of 2016)
 February 15—Deadline for applying for tuition assistance for returning students
Again, much more detail is available online at www.gocathedral.com/tuition.
Thank you,
Duane Emery, Vice President for Enrollment Management

Service Outreach News:
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
“In my pastures the poor shall eat, and the needy lie down in safety. Is 14:30. In poverty and need, we receive much
revelation. Our works in service are opportunities for each of us to see and hear what we long to witness. As the Lord
says, “For the poor who are oppressed and the needy who groan, I myself will arise.” As we arise and serve the poor, we
serve our Lord and much is revealed to us.
Senior Service Hours Senior service hours are due now and service graduation requirements for all four years should be
complete. Heartwarming experiences are being reflected in their service work which is especially insightful.
Coat and Jeans Drive Next week we will host a coat and jeans drive on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec 7 and 8. Bring in
your unused coats and jeans for the homeless and underprivileged during the cold winter months.
Class Service Projects Class service projects become perfect opportunities for off-season sport groups and families. Our
freshmen have supported the Catholic Charities Christmas Store on Oct 12 with twelve bulging bags of toys and 750 pairs
of socks for families shopping at the Christmas Store in December. Most of the opportunities to assist families in December
shopping have been filled. We will not host a tasty spaghetti dinner in December as it conflicts with exams; another group is
graciously performing this for us. On Saturday, Dec 10 at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen (10:30-1:30-juniors) juniors will be
preparing a warm and toasty lunch, dialoging with the homeless, and passing out scarves completed at the Service Festival.
The Cathedral orchestra joined us on Nov 12 to serenade our guests and it was an awesome affair. Our next Sophomore
class spaghetti dinner will be on Wed, January 11 (4:00 PM-7:30 PM). Thanks for your efforts to join us in these great
ministries. Details on all of these class service projects in December are noted below in Service Opportunities
Service Festival-Tuesday, November 15, 2011 We passed out some of our kits for healthy family lifestyles that were
packaged by Cavan at the service festival. The IPS students were quite excited about the jump ropes, cookbooks and tips
for healthy lifestyles. Thanks to Cavan students for a great effort.
Peru Mission Trip Further details about our fourth Peru mission trip are available on the website. We have asked that the
first trip deposit of $600 and your application be turned in by December 1 so that we can get some flights booked for our
travel. Many students are interested in the upcoming summer mission to Peru and the children’s home (Hogar) in
Chaclacayo. It is an enthralling opportunity to enjoy a service, language and cultural adventure in Lima and Cuzco, Peru.
Over seventy five children are cared for by Dr. Tony Lazarra at the Hogar. For the application, click here.
NOLA Here is the a video about some of our work in New Orleans from WWL TV8 in New Orleans:
:http://www.wwltv.com/video/featured-videos/Quiet-Hero-Woman-leads-group-to-preserve-gravesites-of-the-poor133561603.html. We celebrated our 2011 NOLA mission trip experiences with a wonderful celebration dinner last night on
November 29 in the SLC at 6:30 PM. Our students were courageous and generous in the works that they performed. Great
work, Irish!

Service Hours on Power School Normally, service hours may be viewed on Power School. They are current
for all hours received since the start of school. For the 2011-12 academic year, service hours for seniors are
due December 1, 2011 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2011-12,
freshmen, sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2012. The service hours for all students will be
shown on their second quarter report card. If the hours for this year are completed by April 1, hours earned
after April 1 may be credited to the next year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project basis as
well. After Sep 1, hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service
performance. Click here to go directly to service opportunities on the web and for problems with

Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each month.
The balance of 2011 and 2012 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community needs.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 2011-12 are due on March 1,
2012. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2011-2012 are due on December 1, 2011. Click here for
the 2011-12 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2011-12 Service Documentation form. Click here for the
Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.
Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not
21
accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not
accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

Athletics:
~~~~
IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (11-28-11) - "Promoting education-based athletics in Indiana."
Can you put a bad game or performance behind you? How would you react if you missed a last second shot or
made a foolish play costing your team a chance to win a game? What about just playing a poor game?
It happens all the time. Most sporting events are not decided until the last few minutes of play. Don't be afraid to
take the shot, make the last out, or be on that defensive stopper that decides the game.
However, don't make excuses if you fall short. Accept the responsibility in knowing that you did your best and try
to learn from the experience.
Never dwell on the negatives! Remember, the first play of the game is just as important as the last play of
the game. That's why you should play hard and smart all game long!
Meditation: Romans 10:9-18
How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the good news! (Romans 10:15)
With these words, taken from the Book of Isaiah, St. Paul paints a picture of someone dedicated to preaching the good
news of the kingdom of God. His focus on “feet” only emphasizes the way those committed to evangelization are always on
the move, always walking, or even running, to spread the gospel. Paul’s words also show how beautiful it is to see someone
26
standing firm with the dignity of a child of God. How beautiful to God is the one who preaches, the one who walks with him,
and the one who endures to the end!
What a perfect description of the apostle Andrew! A disciple of John the Baptist, Andrew heard John testify to Jesus (John
1:36). He accepted Jesus’ invitation to stay with him and then went into action right away. He ran to bring the good news—
“We have found the Messiah”—to his brother Peter (1:41). For three years, Andrew traveled with Jesus, watching him
perform miracles and learning about the kingdom from him. Even after Jesus died and rose,
Andrew stayed on the move, just like his Master. He took the good news into the world, traveling
as far as Constantinople until he finally gave his life for the Lord in the city of Patras (in modernday Greece).
It’s inspiring to think of how beautiful, how good and pleasing, Andrew’s faithful endurance was to
the Father. But did you know that you are created for that beauty too? No matter how far along you
are in your journey with Jesus, you can do more for him and his church.
It doesn’t have to be hard to tell other people about the Lord. All you have to do is share your own experiences of Jesus:
how he has healed you, perhaps, or how you began to know his love. You can start simply, by sharing with your family or
friends. You don’t need a theology degree. You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to speak from the heart.
The Holy Spirit will take care of the rest.
“Jesus, I don’t want to stand still. Teach me how to keep moving forward, just as Andrew did, bringing your good news to
everyone I know.”
Blessings,
