The small family of three only held the kind hearted King Thomas, his so called lovely wife Queen Annabelle and the typical blond-haired, blue eyed and oh-so-handsome Prince Alexander. This was no ordinary family; they had the amazing ability to speak to royal animals, including the much loved family guinea pig by the name of Kevin. But that was not the only reason they were not the cliché royal family that everyone seemed to think they were; they had a secret. And it was a big one. The king and queen weren’t ones to keep secrets, especially not ones this big, but it was necessary to keep their flawless reputation intact. Not even Prince Alexander knew; he hadn’t even been born when it happened, but little did he know that he had an older sister. She was beautiful, but in her own way; she wasn’t blonde with blue eyes like the rest of her family, but brunette with fascinating eyes that changed depending on her mood. It was what made her special, but more importantly; it was what made her Antonia Robshaw. Antonia had been concealed away from everyone, staying in the servant’s quarters located down the hill from the castle. She worked as a butcher to serve her family and she absolutely hated it, but she had no choice but to work there. When she was born her parents had many arguments as to what to do with her. Her mother said she wasn’t royal. Brown hair? Forever changing eye colour? This was not what Robshaw women looked like at all! What appeared to be the loving mother Annabelle, did not care for her newborn daughter, she neglected and abandoned her, all because of her unique appearance. But the king had other ideas, there was no convincing his stubborn wife into keeping their daughter so he handed her down to his trusted servants to take great care of his only daughter. He came to visit her every so often and all of this was kept a secret from the rest of the family. But what happens when everyone finds out? 4 Chapter 2~Toni Loud voices woke me at the crack of dawn but that’s okay, I was used to it. Slowly I forced myself to wake up; I didn’t want to be late again. Lara bustles around, picking up my dirty uniform and thrusting them in my hands. I pulled a face at my friend and she pulled one back. This was going to be a long day. I walked fast across the leaf covered land, slowly getting closer to the castle. My eyes sting from the sunlight that is beginning to rise but I just increased my speed, I was late. I hurried through the large gates and tried to act like I hadn’t just arrived. But the head chef was onto me in seconds. ‘I see your late again Toni?’ He asked me, obviously irritated by my late arriving. ‘Yes, sorry chef,’ ‘This is unacceptable; we may have to reconsider our choice in hiring you.’ I start to panic, I know I can’t leave this place, it’s my home… Right? ‘It won’t happen again chef,’ I rush my words and then run off before he can answer me. I arrive at my bench, a piece of raw meat awaiting me. I pull on some gloves and start beating the meat with my hammer, trying to act completely normal. It seems my fears are finally becoming a reality, how much further away can I get from my family? I didn’t want to find out. I was stuck there, stuck being the little butcher girl. I was born a princess, why couldn’t I stay a princess? I beat the meat harder, not wanting the answer to my question; I know the answer will hurt. I looked around the kitchen, it wasn’t very big, yet it housed so many different cooks and specialists. The sauce maker, the head chef and then there’s me, the butcher. I bit the side of my mouth and tasted blood. I needed to get out of this kitchen, it was too hectic for me and I wanted to be something more than just a butcher, more than just a would be princess. I bit my mouth again, old habit. While my meat was cooking I went outside, I needed the break. The land looked beautiful in the autumn. The usually dull, lifeless grass was covered in deep red and orange leaves, all different shapes. It made the day seem a little bit better in a strange way. I looked up and saw huge balconies, painted gold and red. I have always been curious, wondering what my life would have been like if my parents had decided not to disown me, if I hadn’t changed my name to Toni, if I was still Princess Antonia Robshaw. I glanced at my reflection quickly before returning to my spot at the kitchen bench. I don’t look like a princess. I have mouse brown hair, and eyes that change colour according to my mood. With my sun-kissed skin, I don’t look like I belong from the royal family. I’m not one of those stupid pretty porcelain dolls like the other royals. Maybe that’s why it was so easy to pretend I wasn’t a part of their family. I kept staring until I remembered the meat, my job, reality. I rushed back into the 5 kitchen, waiting for my meat to be done. One of the cooks stares at me, it seemed like a challenge, I simply narrow my eyes and glare back. I could nearly feel my eyes shifting from one colour to the next. After a minute he pries his eyes off mine and I felt a wave of accomplishment wash over myself and pulled out the large piece of meat. Slowly I carved it and placed it on a table, waiting for someone to take it out to my ‘family’. But nobody comes, so I simply straighten my shirt and carry the dish out to the dining room. I see them waiting, smoothing out their skirts and straightening their ties. My hands begin to shake and I clutch the silver dish tighter, willing myself not to make a fool of myself. My father sees me and his eyes fill with terror and sadness. I put the dish down and stare at my brother, my 16 year old brother. I narrow my eyes and try not to look angry. He narrows his eyes back at me and I feel like the cook in the kitchen. My brother and I are alike, different but alike. I draw my eyes away and the look of his face screams out victory. He trips me over as I’m walking out of the room. I blush ferociously and bite the inside of my cheek so hard that I wince in pain. I hurry out of the room and breathe slowly. I knew what I was going to do. I don’t like Vegemite and I know he doesn’t either. I went into the kitchen chuckling, stuffing the jar of Vegemite under my shirt, waiting until he goes to sleep. 6 Chapter 3~Prince Alexander As the sun shined through the window, my eyes flicker open. I told those servants to keep my curtains closed! As I sit up, I see a brown substance smeared across my pillow. I quickly put my hand on my chin and as I take it away I see the same brown substance again on my fingertips. There was only one thing this could be. VEGEMITE. I yell out for my servants “QUICKLY! EVERYBODY IN HERE AT ONCE!” Instantaneously I hear heavy footsteps echoing across the corridor. Five servants quickly burst in with shocked looks on their faces. I yell at the top of my lungs “GET THIS HORRIBLE THING OFF MY FACE!” The servants quickly run everywhere looking for towels and water. I place my hand on my face completely ignoring the fact that I still have vegemite on it. “The last thing I wanted was such hectic behaviour” As one of the servants wipes my face roughly with a red towel, I hear snickering coming from behind me. I take my head away from the towel and see the other four servants laughing hysterically. I huff angrily “And what are you four laughing at?” All four servants now have a worried expression on their face “Now leave” All five servants leave, but the red towel still remains in my lap. As I continue to get all the vegemite off my face a quiet voice echoes through the room “That’s the third time this month that’s happened to you, and it never gets old” I look towards my window sill and see Kevin sitting there all smug. His furry white with light brown spots complexion looked nice in the sun, it’s a pity he was so irritating. I climb of my bed and place him on my shoulder “Come on, we’re going horse riding” … As I make my way down the secret tunnel with Kevin, he begins to babble “Did you ever wonder why you can understand me? I mean that is kind of weird. Wait, what if your father is actually a Guinea Pig in disguise? THAT WOULD MAKE SO MUCH SENSE!-” 7 Kevin is cut off by the blinding sunlight hitting both of our eyes. As usual my horse Abacus was waiting patiently for me, with my bow attached to the saddle. I smirk at the sight of him and Kevin begins his babbling once more “I don’t want to go horse riding today! Why can’t we go bake a cake or something-“ I interrupt his demands, “Like it or lump it Kevin” Kevin huffs, obviously annoyed “Come on. We don’t have all day” As I climb onto Abacus, I pick up my bow and load it with a royal arrow. I look closely at the writing engraved in the middle of the arrow ‘Robshaw Royals’. “Typical” I whisper to myself. Kevin peers over my shoulder and asks “What are you looking at? Let’s make a move!” I pat Abacus on his thigh and he begins to pick up speed. The forest always looks nice in autumn. The paths were riddled with curled up orange leaves and the trees were bare. The atmosphere of the forest at this time of year is calm and collected. I like it this way. If only it was like this every day. 8 Chapter 4~King Thomas I was perched on the Royal bed, my head bowed down in thought. I absentmindedly ran my fingers down the silky, cobalt duvet. I had many pressing matters to attend to; like Council Meetings and signing important Documents, but the only coherent thought I could form was of a certain brunette girl named Antonia. My daughter. Unbeknownst to anyone, she was working down in the kitchens, as a butcher. And like any Father, I was very worried about her. Only on rare occasions did I speak to her. I’d seen glimpses of her, walking moodily along the castle corridors or tossing haughty glares towards Alexander. And she always haunts my dreams. My son had complained about her on numerous occasions, and when he does, I always have to hide a smile. They truly do have a sibling rivalry. Every day without her was truly torture. She was my daughter, and even though she was aware of it, she didn’t say a word. It was unjust and cruel and I wanted to have a proper conversation with her. Filled with a sudden strength and determination, I stood up and walked briskly out of the Royal Chambers. I was going to talk to my daughter and no-one was going to stop me. Except maybe her. My wife, Queen Annabelle strode towards me. “Where are you going Thomas?” she boomed, in that quiet yet commanding voice of hers. I froze in my tracks. All of a sudden, the adrenaline rushed out of my body. “On…on a walk” I stammered, raking a hand through my tousled beard. Annabelle pursed her bow-shaped lips in disapproval. “Be back soon, then” she said. “You know that I do not approve of you walking outside in Autumn”. I nodded. “Yes” I murmured and walked on shakily. The confidence was gone. I reached the kitchen and hovered in the background unsurely. Was I to go to her? If Annabelle found out, I would certainly be in trouble. As would Antonia. Antonia suddenly appeared with a knife in hand. She began to ferociously chop down on the piece of meat, her now green eyes smouldering. One of her prettier traits was her kaleidoscope of eye colours. 9 Although she had ever-changing eye colour and mouse-brown hair, she still had the same facial features as us. Naturally pink, bow-shaped lips and a small, upturned nose. Thankfully Annabelle had not noticed the similarities, although it was unlikely that she would, because she had never even gave the servants the time of day. “Toni!” the head Chef called and I snapped out of my reverie. Antonia hurried to attention, and I watched as she carried out the Chef’s orders, looking rather indignant. I felt a sudden connection to her, and I stepped forward robotically, as if I was under some sort of spell. All of a sudden, her eyes locked onto mine and they changed into a darker brown colour. She stared at me and her icy façade thawed. Her insecurities and vulnerabilities shone through. I couldn’t take it anymore. I walked forward purposefully when someone suddenly called out my name. I froze, my feet rooted to the spot. It sounded like Annabelle. Was it? I didn’t turn to investigate. Instead, like the coward I was, I spun around and ran back to my Chambers, my velvet cloak billowing out behind me. When I arrived back at the chambers, I took big gulps of air and paced anxiously around the room. I was a weakling. I needed to see Antonia. I was terrified of Annabelle. All these thoughts ran through my mind, as I sank onto my bed. I was a terrible father and no matter how much I tried, I couldn’t change. 10 Chapter 5~Toni I had run away early in the day to get away. I just needed to smell the fresh air, something different to raw meat. I sat in my little hut looking out to see the beach. The floor around the hut was covered in fine white sand. It was then I heard the shifting of the sand. Someone was walking towards me, but who? No one ever came on this side of the royal land. I poked my head out of the hut to see his long blond hair flowing in the wind and his ocean blue eyes staring right back at me. The Royal Highness was coming my way. Great, just what I need, the snobby Prince here to kick me off my own land. I came out of my hut to see what he wanted. He approached me and just started in disgust before he started speaking “What are you doing here on my land?” Alex asked me. “Your land? This is my land” “No, this is Royal land and you’re not a royal but I am. So… this is my land” I had a little giggle and bit my mouth I was trying really hard not to lose it. ‘If only you knew’ I thought to myself ‘if only you knew. ‘ “Whoa, how did you do that” Alex asked me “Do what?” “Your eyes just changed from deep green to brown” “That’s because I was feeling ok until you made me angry!” It was almost a shout I wasn’t sure how much longer of him I could handle. I took a big breath and bit my mouth ‘keep it together Toni’ I thought ‘He will eventually leave’ What did he come here to do anyway? No one comes here, ever and he decides to come here today when I’m here. I looked at him and it was then I noticed the bow and arrow in his hands. It looks like he wanted to do archery today. But why here? “Leave, now” the Prince demanded How dare he speak to me like that? There is no way I’m going to leave here. “I said leave” he said to me again “I’m not leaving here, I’m a royal too you know, so you can’t kick me off my own land!” This time I shouted. ‘Wait, I wasn’t meant to say that.’ I smiled sweetly at him and giggled “Just kidding I should leave and get back to work” I bowed slightly and said “you’re Highness” and ran off. He just stood there not sure at what to think of my sudden change of heart. 11 Chapter 6~Prince Alexander “Father, you know… you know the butcher?” “… Yes, yes. Of course I do. Why do you ask?” “Where… is she from?” “…” “No, no. It’s just… she reminds me of something from the past. I find her very close and yet, she’s standing at the furthest place I can reach.” Why? Why is it that I find her so familiar? The brunette hair, the deep scent of the raw meat, the shabby hut… Everything about her contrasts from the environment of my life, but everything about her feels close upon me. “What do you mean…by finding her close?” “I don’t know. It’s just the mood…the atmosphere she tends to give off. The way she talks, the way she reacts, the way she stands. It all seems…like she is a part of me.” It felt as if I had to complete a puzzle in my head, all by myself. Of course, it wasn’t like I had this affective ‘love’ feeling towards her with all the vegemite wars between us, but… there was a high resemblance between us, as if we were related. “Oh, I guess there was a happening behind our backs, during the days I can barely remember”. Father flinched. In his eyes, I could sense a deep series of concerns. Even though his daily timeline was worrying, the flinch he just made felt different from usual. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing, nothing.” “Are you sure?” “Yes, of course. All is fine.” His mouth was as calm as can be, but trouble was invading his pale face. He may have been getting exhausted, which started leading my footsteps out of the room. Just before I was turning the door knob, I was called back. “Son?” “Yes, Father.” “Uh… I do not know how you will react to this…but, but your mother. She disowned her; she doesn’t want her to be part of our family.” “Sorry? Who?” “The ‘unroyal’ brunette, the changing of the eye colours, the bulky acts as a young girl… Your mother thought she didn’t fit in, and that… keeping her was a disgrace to the Robshaw family.” “Eye colours? Uh, father, who is this we are talking about?” “I tried all to persuade your mother to keep her; she was and is still a child of ours regardless of the different looks. However…as you know, your mother is very straight 12 forward. During those days, she was as stubborn as can be, which… which then made me to decide to keep her, without Annabelle knowing.” “…” “As... our butcher.” “…If It’s our butcher, is it...” “Yes, Toni, it is.” That was it. The puzzle was on its last piece. Before I knew it, I was running towards the tunnel. 13 Chapter 7~Toni I was in the tunnel when my brother suddenly appeared. We slowly, take steps towards each other until we are only arms width apart, for the first time I take a good look at him. How are we so different? I wonder. His golden blond hair, pale face and blue eyes contrast strongly against my mousey brown hair, sun kissed skin and ever changing eyes. The silence is deafening, the air heavy with awkwardness and weighs down on our shoulders. We both go to talk simultaneously. He immediately apologised and blushes. NO WAY! I quickly take a look outside, checking if pigs are flying; Nope no pigs. I cannot believe he apologised, and even more far-fetched he BLUSHED! This was the guy that used to put vegemite in my shoes. “It’s okay, you can go first” I say to start the conversation again. “Um well, tell me about yourself” he says nervously. “Don’t worry little brother, I don’t bite” I tease, he sends me a playful glare. We went on like that for a while, just asking questions and learning about each other, with playful banter every now and then. “So baby brother, what do you do for fun?” I ask keeping up the light-hearted conversation. “Please don’t call me that,” he begs “and I go hunting in the forest with my bow and arrow on my horse, Abacus.” “Really, you will have to teach me one day” I reply, but as soon as I say that, I regret it. We won’t ever be able to do that, because of me; because I’m not picture perfect; because I don’t have blond hair or blue eyes. I look down to my feet as if they were the most fascinating thing in the world. Alex notices the change in me, and tries to make eye contact. I avert my eyes as I feel them start to shift to a faded ice blue. “Toni… Toni, hey um what… do you do for fun?” he asks trying to change the subject. That sparked interest in me. Lifting my head, smirking, my eyes once again change to a bright purple. “Well my dear younger brother, I am a… boxer” I answer smugly. I search his face waiting for a reaction. 1 second, 2 seconds, 3 seconds pass and he still hasn’t moved a muscle. I flick his head trying to get a reaction, anything out of him. His head jerks to the side and he rubs his head. “Ouch, what was that for?” Alex whines, still rubbing his head. “You were in a trance, dimwit” I respond, laughing. “So you’re a boxer?” he asks smirking, I raise my eyebrow at him. He suddenly lunges at me, attempting to pin me on the ground. Acting out of reflex I immediately side step and place my foot on top of he’s back. Finally realising what I had just done I start laughing and dig my foot in a little, teasing him. “Okay, okay you proved your point! LET ME UP!” he whines. As I lift off my foot, and help him up; I hear the fast speed clicking of high heels coming towards us. 14 15 Chapter 8~Toni Panic-strikes, as we hear the loud, reckless footsteps of what sounds like the Queen heading towards me. ‘The Queen is coming!’ Alex shrieks, and that was the last I heard of him. From that moment onwards I knew I was going to be alone with the Queen. My worst nightmare, was unfortunately coming true. The thudding of her footsteps escalates as she gets closer to me, and all I think of is the worst possible scenario. What is she going to say to me? She sounds pretty angry. How will she react when we meet? I am biting the inside of my cheek so badly; I’m surprised I haven’t made a hole right through it. Her footsteps intensify, and not only do I hear large footsteps, but I perceive what sounds like a cry of help. I am so curious as to find out what is happening. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the Queen, or should I say, my long lost mother, appears, crying hysterically. Here I am, face to face with the women who abandoned me; left me behind because I didn’t fit in with the cliché of her family, and now here she is asking me for my assistance, and I am left with no choice but to help her, she is clearly in a world of pain. ‘I…… I fell over. The Queen whimpered. Her face is red and blotchy, she is sweating, and the sweat is dripping everywhere, all over the floor. ‘I remember tripping over a nearby cobblestone, up near the castle. I knocked my head, and twisted my ankle all at once, and…….now I feel…… very dizzy.’ All of a sudden, her voice begins to fade away, slowly but defiantly. Right before my eyes, my mother fainted. I was lost for words; I didn’t know what to do. I just screamed at the top of my lungs, as loud as I could, in a hope that someone would hear me, down, underground in this pitch black tunnel. I can sense my strange eyes changing from a dark brown, to hazel, my stress levels were quickly increasing. I made the decision to pick her up and bring her to the closest thing to safety. As I am walking my mother through the tunnel, her blonde hair so long it is dragging across the floor. I think to myself, what has her life like after she left me? What her ambitions or hobbies were. But most of all, did she regret leaving me behind. It’s now been 15 minutes since my mother collapsed, I am glad I took up boxing all those years ago, it helps when carrying my mother up all those stairs. All of a sudden I feel a slight movement, and my mother awakens. 16 Chapter 9~Queen Annabelle My head ached and my ankle pained as I sat up in the cold to see the ever anticipating, familiar face of Toni… or should I say Antonia my long lost daughter. Regret rained over me like a hail storm as I remembered getting rid of the girl. But now too see her all grown up and working under the king’s orders made me furious. I attempted standing up but my foot gave way and I slumped onto the hard, cold, stone floor. I just looked at Antonia and wondered to myself; those eyes of hers are so mysterious and fascinating. She had an unreadable expression on her awaiting face. I could see Alex staring at me through weary eyes. I didn’t know what to do. The family guinea pig; Kevin, was examining my ankle. That’s when I realised there was a piece of cloth wrapped around my right foot where I had tripped over a piece of cobblestone jutting out of the ground. I felt like a complete fool but I was still enraged about her in my presence. “Help me up” I impatiently demanded to the two of them gazing at me as if star struck. They both reached for my arms as I stumbled to my feet. “Thank you for bandaging my foot, Alex” I said thankfully, but I only received funny looks. “I bandaged your ankle not Alex” Antonia said stepping forward. She looked at me through hopeful eyes as I watched her bite the inside of her mouth. Her eyes changed dramatically from a dark brown, nearly hazel colour to a misty green. Dazzled, I didn’t know what to say. “Listen I-I’m sorry for sixteen years ago I-“ “Hey it doesn’t matter ok that was the past at least I know who my parents are and that you’re sorry, ok!” I was abruptly cut off by Antonia. Her eyes were like a wild fire burning through a sea of blue stared at me in annoyance. Speechless, I stood there wondering to myself if she would ever truly forgive me. “You know what, I forgive you…” Those three words brought back colour into my life. And to think I tried to get rid of this girl who put light into my world. We all smiled and out of nowhere Alex decided to hug Antonia and me forcing us into a group hug. It ended up being an extremely awkward and uncomfortable family reunion hug, but without hesitation we all smiled. 17 Chapter 10~Kevin Now you’re probably wondering what happened after that big family hug. It all ended with Prince Alexander becoming the perfect prince and Toni living in the Royal Palace. Toni is no longer a disgrace towards Her Majesty the Queen after her courageous rescue in the underground tunnels. Meanwhile I’m still living in my cage on the third floor of the castle. Really ‘I’ the guinea pig, who brought this disgrace-riddened family to their happily ever after, still locked up in this metal contraption? To be honest, I believe this family still needs some serious mending. The story all started with an isolated, royal daughter and a snobby son. Parents: a cantankerous Queen and an unstable King. The first thing you would think is that the family would fall apart and start crumbling to the ground. However because of me, the exquisite guinea pig, Kevin, came along and saved the day, they finally live in peace. After what seemed like eternal pranking between the siblings, they make up in a dark, odorous tunnel under the rich, spotless, extravaganza of the castle. Meanwhile the parents of this troublesome twinning are still in their usual state. Mother: unaware of her daughter’s occupation as her personal butcher. Father: in his unstable, breaking down hole of emotions and love for his only children. After the disastrous fall of the Queen Annabelle and the act of bravery from her daughter the former butcher, they make up and their bond becomes stronger. The wussy brother who runs away from his injured mother in the time of crisis becomes a confident, dreamy boy loved by the princesses of nearby kingdoms. The king is proud of his bonded family. The very thought brings him to tears. I’m glad I brought this family back together. Of the many generations of this family I’ve reunited, this is a beautiful ending. The thought brings a tear down my furry cheek. The royal family lives the usual royal life. Prince Alex plans on taking over the throne and Toni wishes to help out in the royal boxing functions. However, I get to live for many more years, advising the future royals. I just hope Alex decides to let me out of the 18 cage soon. I could only imagine the luxurious food the chef is whisking up in the kitchen. Imagine all the doughnuts, cakes and candies. “Mmmmmm…” The very thought makes my mouth water. So this story ends with a happy royal family and their pet, the foreverliving guinea pig with a food-related, mischievous plan. I rub my paws together, now all I need to do is break out of this imprisonment. I could smell the cake already…bringing the Robshaw’s together really was for the best. 19 For young Toni or should I say Former Princess Antonia Robshaw, life isn’t easy. Being disowned and cast into the life of being an 18 year old butcher, she wishes she was a part of her family. Her 16 year old brother Prince Alexander knew nothing until one day he stumbles upon a little hut on the beach and everything he knows changes. Toni, Alex and the little guinea pig- Kevin are trying to put their complicated family back together, but their mother seems set on the fact that Toni is a disgrace. Will Toni finally be accepted back into her family? Or will she continue living as an outcast? 20
