Kodaly Pitch Lesson Plan Concept: Students will learn “re” solfa pitch and hand sign Skills: I can sing “re” I can write solfa for a song I can sing using correct solfa hand symbols I can sing “re” in a song Materials: Felt staves with felt notes, “Bluebird” song, whiteboard and marker Process: Sing Bluebird, have students listen What is the song about? Melody pitch in body (sitting/standing) USING WORDS La: head, sol: shoulders, mi: stomach, re: thighs, do: ground/knees Pass out felt staves with notes Sol on line Sing first half of phrase together If it starts on sol, can you figure it out? I think you can! Hum first half phrase I think it uses sols, las, and mis Hum again Sing first half phrase on solfege Now what does that look like? Where is la/mi? Write on board What about the second half? Same! Let’s sing the second phrase! What’s the first note? Higher/lower than last note? What’s this weird note? Let’s skip it for now! These last three notes, are they neighbors or are they far from each other? Use melodic pitch in body as a reminder Do, mi, do Sing second phrase, on solfege, humming “re” But what about this note? Is it higher or lower than the first note? Let’s sing it! Is it do? Sing as though “do” If it’s not “do” and it’s not “mi,” what could it be? What a mystery! I think we’ll call this note “re,” and “re” looks like this Show hand symbol It’s like it’s leading right up to mi! Sing second phrase on solfa with symbols Conclusion: So what was this new note we just learned? What does it look like? Sing whole song on solfa with symbols Sing song on words Assessment: Observe for accurate kinesthetic pitch, hand symbols, singing the right symbols, and accuracy in felt staves and notes
