ABORTION…WHAT CAN WE
DO?

Abortion, what exactly is it? According to dictionary.com, abortion is “the removal of an
embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy”. In order to fully understand this
definition, we must also know the definitions of an embryo and a fetus. According to
dictionary.com, an embryo is “the young…in the early stages of development within the womb”
and a fetus is “the young…in the womb…in the later stages of development”. Gathering from
these definitions, we can conclude that abortion removes the young from the womb in order to
end the pregnancy and also ends the life of the unborn child. (www.dictionary.com1)
I am pro-life. This means that I believe that life starts at conception and that I strongly disagree
with the humanity and legality of abortion. Why? Well, besides the medical evidence that
shows the amazing characteristics of life right from conception, in the Bible, David says, “For
You (God) created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb…Your eyes
saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of
them came to be.” Psalm 139:13,16 (NIV). God creates life and “knits” us together right from
the moment of conception, and therefore, abortion, (which we learned earlier removes the
unborn baby from the womb) terminates the baby’s life. What is it called when a person’s life is
ended by the choice and actions of another person? Murder!
God has a specific plan and purpose for every person, as we can see from the statement God
told Jeremiah in Jeremiah 1:5 (NIV): “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you
were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” God had planned for
Jeremiah to be a prophet before he was conceived. God also has a specific plan and purpose for
every person’s life before they are conceived. It is just heart breaking to think of all the aborted
babies who were never given the opportunity to grow and live out God’s plan for their lives. I
can’t help but wonder what amazing plans God had for each of these children.
One of the greatest human massacres ever recorded was the Holocaust, in which around 11
million people were killed! (www.history1900.about.com 2) Since 1973, there have been
roughly 53 million legal abortions in the U.S. (www.guttmacher.org 3). That’s more than 4.5
times the number of people massacred in the Holocaust!
In the United States, in 2011, there were 16,238 homicides which is around 44.4 homicides
daily. (www.cdc.gov 4) In that same year, there were 1.06 million abortions, which is about
2,904 daily. (This is also the lowest number of abortions since 1973!) (www.guttmacher.org 5).
In less than one week, the number of abortions committed in 2011 was more than the number
of homicides committed in the entire year! Just because of the abortions in 2011, the U.S.
population is now lacking 1.06 million 3-4 year olds who would otherwise be running around,
chattering in the grocery stores, playing at city parks, eating in restaurants, and just being
typical happy toddlers.
So can anything be done to eliminate abortions? What can a Christian do to help? I believe one
of the main things Christians can do is to share the Gospel. How would this work? Well, if more
people knew the Gospel and lived a God-honoring life, there would be less teen and young
adult pregnancies, and more knowledge of why abortion is wrong, and therefore, fewer (or no)
abortions. As we go out and share the Gospel with people with the intent to grow the family of
God and to help eliminate abortions, let us keep in mind the sweet promise of Isaiah 43:1 (ESV)
where it says how we are redeemed and called by our Lord, the Lord who created and formed
us… “But now says the Lord---He who created you, O Jacob, He who formed you, O Israel: ‘Fear
Not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine.’”
