 To increase nurses’ knowledge about the Partnership’s Fetal and Infant Mortality
Review Program and what they can do to refer families to it
 To increase nurses’ understanding of the bereavement process and how they can
support families who are grieving
 To update nurses on the American Academy of Pediatrics’ 2011 Guidelines for a Safe
Infant Sleeping Environment
Objectives
As a result of attending this continuing nursing education program, participants will be able to:
 Describe New Jersey’s Fetal and Infant Mortality Review Program.
 Explain to a woman who has lost a baby the potential benefits of her participating in the
Partnership’s Fetal and Infant Mortality Review Program.
 Describe the bereavement process.
 Name at least three actions a nurse can take to support a family who has lost an infant.
 Name at least three resources nurses can use with grieving families.
 Discuss the critical risk reduction message for parents and caregivers in order to reduce
the risk of SIDS/SUID (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Sudden Unexpected Infant
Death).
 List at least three barriers to back sleeping.
 Describe the nurse’s key role as educator to parents and caregivers about SIDS/SUID.
 Describe at least three ways to effectively communicate SIDS/SUID risk reduction
messages to parents and caregivers.
Target Audience
Inpatient perinatal, neonatal and pediatric nurses, who provide care for newborns and
education for their parents, especially nurses who work in Neonatal Intensive Care Units
Continuing Nursing Education Contact Hours
This program has been awarded 3.5 contact hours.
The Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey is an approved provider
of continuing nursing education by NJSNA, an accredited approver, by the American Nurses
Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Provider #P194-11/10-13. Provider approval is valid through November 30, 2013.
Accreditation refers to recognition of continuing education activities only and does not imply
approval or endorsement of any commercial product.
Successful completion: To receive contact hours for this CNE program, the registrant must sign
in on the sign-in sheet, attend the entire program and complete and submit the program
evaluation form.
Registration
Fee: None – this is a free continuing nursing education program. However, a personal check
for $15 payable to the Partnership for MCH is requested to hold your seat. Check will be
returned to you when you sign in. If you do not attend, the Partnership will deposit your check.
Directions for Parking and Finding the Meeting Room
Parking garage is located across the street from Newark Beth Israel’s main entrance on Osborne
Terrace. Parking is $5 for the day – use the visitors parking which is clearly marked. You must
bring your ticket with you and pay in the lobby before you leave.
Enter the main lobby which is on the same side as the parking garage. The posted directions will lead up
the escalator, across the bridge, to the D building elevators. Take these elevators to the 3rd floor. The
Parsonnet Auditorium is directly across the elevators to the right.
