Advice on choosing subjects
Most students choose 3-4 subjects. The choice of subjects can be significant for
future careers or for entry to university courses. Students should therefore consider
the following when making their final choices.
Career Aspiration
Some careers and degree courses have particular entry requirements. For example
chemistry is normally essential for medicine and sciences is considered favourably for sports
science degrees.
If you are unsure about subject requirements please get some advice from the careers
advice team who will have a stall at the Open Evening. Alternatively, look at the entry
requirements for degree courses at www.ucas.com
Interests
It is important that you are interested in the work covered as you will need to be motivated
for up to two years in the subject. Speak with the subject teachers to clarify your perception
of the course
Ability
Your results in chosen subjects will determine whether or not you meet the entry
requirements of degree courses. If you wish to optimise your eligibility to as many degree
course as possible, it is important to pick subject you are more likely to perform well in.
Consider how you performed in your mock exam and most recent grade sweep as
well as the advice of your tutor and teachers.
Coursework Requirements
Some subjects have coursework requirements. Some people perform well on coursework,
some prefer exams.
Find out if there are coursework requirements at the subject stalls. Ask about the
nature of the coursework and when it is set?
Teacher advice
Whilst the final decision about subject choices is yours, your teachers have huge amount of
knowledge and experience of teaching the course, and can offer good advice. They know
what students find difficult and what qualities are needed for success. If they teach you they
may have a view on how well you will do in their subject.
