１．授業の概要・到達目標 (General Description and Expected Achievements)
This course will focus on the skills of speaking and listening in an academic environment.
This course will have an online component to it where students will be expected to work independently.
The aim of this course is to enhance students’ ability to perform communicatively in an academic environment by
providing them with abundant opportunities to process and discuss information on different academic themes and
present their opinions to others in class discussions and group work.
The course will provide students with the essential skills in listening, speaking and note-taking they need to
perform better on the TOEFL iBT or the listening section of the ITP.
It will also assist students with preparing for the academic rigor of studying abroad.
Students considering taking either the TOEFL iBT or ITP should take this course along with the ACE 3 TOEFL
courses taught by myself or Professor Matsuzaki.

３．履修上の注意・準備学習の内容 (Caveats and Course Preparation)
This course will expand on what is taught in Professor Matsuzaki’s and my ACE 3 TOEFL courses.
Students will be required to use computers for this class. Please consider this carefully before registering. You must
have some degree of proficiency with computers, as there is a significant online component with homework and
assessment being done online. Additionally, the course is meant to help students with preparing for the TOEFL iBT
which is a computer-based test.
Due to the extensive amount of material in the textbook, we will only cover select material.

Freshmen may either enroll in the 3rd or 5th period class. They cannot enroll in both.

20% Attendance
50% Participation (includes in-class activities and activities done outside of class)
30% Assessment (includes two online interviews with the instructor to evaluate speaking and listening ability.)
