The course aims at developing listening skills and techniques.
The course focuses on listening skills that are necessary to function both in an academic environment
and real life situations. During the classes students cover a variety of topics and materials. At the end
of the course students are able to understand and comment on the main idea and the details of
authentic recordings and academic lectures. They are ready to take notes and initiate question upon
the passage as well as identify the speaker’s attitude and tone. Students are prepared to pass the
final practical examination.

Course description:
This course is designed to build the students’ English pronunciation skills in order to prepare them for
academic work in English. It includes practice in discrimination and production of the English vowels
and consonants. It provides the student with basic tools to transcribe and describe the sounds of the
English Language: the information about the articulatory system (speech organs) and the
International Phonetic Alphabet. The course also focuses on the improvement of areas such as word
and sentence stress, weak forms, intonation, rhythm and connected speech processes (elision,
assimilation, linking). One of the aims of the course is to eliminate common errors resulting from the
discrepancies between spelling and pronunciation in English. Strategies for pronunciation practice
outside the class will also be introduced. Pronunciation practice will include individual, large group
and small group work during class, practice in the language laboratory and at home using the
recordings accompanying the textbook and homework assignments.
The course makes use of various types of authentic and culturally significant materials such as
proverbs, sayings, tongue twisters and poems.

Course description:
This course offers an overview of the political, social and cultural history of Great Britain between
Roman Britain and the twentieth century. It explores major historical issues (e.g. the making of
Britain, the medieval state-church conflict, the Hundred Years’ War, the War of the Roses, the
Glorious Revolution, the welfare state, the Commonwealth, etc.), periods (e.g. Anglo-Saxon England,
medieval England, the English Renaissance, Republican and Restoration Britain, the eighteenth
century, the Victorian Age, WW I and WW II, etc.) and figures (e.g. Alfred the Great, Henry II, Thomas
Becket, Tudor and Stuart monarchs, Queen Victoria, etc.).
The course aims to equip the student with basic knowledge concerning the history of Great Britain,
to present primary literature and to expand vocabulary connected with the content of the course.
That all will also enable the student to study related courses such as British literature and British

The course aims at passing the knowledge and the vocabulary typical for the historical events and
processes in the United States of America. It encompasses the period from pre-colonial times to the
end of Cold War, and it deals with selected social and historical phenomena. The students develop
the ability to perceive connections, similarities and differences between social and political
phenomena, and to estimate their impact in the light of the contemporary events.
The students deal with historically-profiled texts, maps, thematic dictionaries, and other soures. They
develop their skill of critical analysis and interpretation of the historical events and phenomena. As a

The course is designed to introduce topics and elements within the field of linguistics as a further
