It provides the student with basic tools to transcribe and describe the sounds of the English Language: the information about the articulatory system (speech organs) and the International Phonetic Alphabet. The course also focuses on the improvement of areas such as word and sentence stress, weak forms, intonation, rhythm and connected speech processes (elision, assimilation, linking). One of the aims of the course is to eliminate common errors resulting from the discrepancies between spelling and pronunciation in English. Strategies for pronunciation practice outside the class will also be introduced. Pronunciation practice will include individual, large group and small group work during class, practice in the language laboratory and at home using the recordings accompanying the textbook and homework assignments.
