Mysteries intrigue me so I thought this month I would highlight a mystery magazine that captured my attention many years ago. The Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine was first published in 1941 and is the longestrunning short-story mystery magazine in the world. I remember having one volume of this magazine at home when I was growing up. I loved the idea of short mysteries so the magazine really appealed to me. Ellery Queen’s character was a mystery writer and amateur detective in a number of novels written from 1929 to the early 1970’s. The books were written under the pseudonym, or pen name, Ellery Queen with most of the novels being written by cousins Frederic Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee. Although the stories in the magazine are not the work of these men, they are carefully selected for the publication. A year’s subscription for those of us in Canada will run you about $43 US. If you love mystery and need a short infusion of crime solving intrigue, this might be the magazine you have been looking for. The Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine website, boasts the following Stephen King endorsement: “… just the best mystery magazine in the world, bar none.” Of course I also adored the Ellery Queen TV series which unfortunately ran only one season 1975-76.
