Romeo and Juliet Act 3:

Scene summaries

Scene 1 In the street

Benvolio tells Mercutio that there could be a fight. When Tybalt arrives he wants to have a fight with Romeo. Romeo will not fight Tybalt because Tybalt is Juliet’s cousin. Mercutio is very angry and challenges Tybalt. Romeo tries to stop them fighting, but Tybalt wounds Mercutio and then runs away.

Mercutio dies and Romeo is very angry. He finds Tybalt and kills him. Then

Romeo runs away.

Prince Escalus arrives and stops the fighting. Lord and Lady Capulet want

Romeo to be killed because he has killed their nephew, Tybalt. Lord and Lady

Montague say he should not be killed because Tybalt killed his friend, Mercutio.

Prince Escalus changes the punishment from death to banishment. Romeo must leave Verona.

Scene 2 Lord Capulet’s garden

Juliet waits for Romeo’s secret visit. The Nurse arrives and tells her the terrible news. Juliet is very sad about Tybalt’s death, but she loves her husband very much. She is sadder that Romeo is banished from Verona. She wants to see him.

Scene 3 Friar Lawrence’s cell

Romeo is very upset and says he wants to kill himself. The Nurse arrives and tells him Juliet wants to see him. The Nurse arranges for Romeo and Juliet to stay together secretly in the Capulets’ house for their wedding night.
