Quick Start Guide – Bio-ARROW
Start a new biosafety protocol
Firefox, Safari, and Chrome work best. Internet Explorer can be problematic. Make sure to enable popups on your browser.
Begin filling out the protocol by logging onto the ARROW website (https://arrow.wisc.edu) with your
NetID and password. A protocol can be started by the PI or another lab member.
You will see “My Home” screen once you are logged in:

Make sure it has “Study Team Member” displayed as your role in the yellow box:
If “Study Team Member” is not displayed, select “Study Team Member” under My Roles beneath the
yellow box.
To begin a biosafety protocol, select the “New Biosafety Protocol” button:

This will create a new biosafety protocol and you should see the following screen:
Help documents available for filling out the protocol
Utilize the “Paper to Arrow Comparison” document
(https://kb.wisc.edu/arrow/ibc/page.php?id=43379) for assistance in transitioning from the paper
protocol to the online form.
Click on the blue question mark ( ) help links throughout the protocol for help on a particular question.
OBS staff members are also just a phone call away to provide one-on-one assistance with navigating
ARROW and completing your protocol transition, 263-2037.
Working on the biosafety protocol
If a question is required to be answered, it is marked with a red asterisk (*). The required questions
need to be completed before you can advance to the next section of the protocol.

At the top of each screen, there are buttons that will help you navigate the protocol:
The “Save” button allows you to save the information you have entered. Your information is also saved
every time you select the “Continue” button. The “Continue” button allows you to advance to the next
page of the protocol. The “Jump Around” dropdown menu will allow you to jump to different sections of
the protocol. Please note that some of the later sections pull information from earlier sections so it is
important to fill out the protocol in sequential order. The “Exit” button will allow you to the exit the
protocol. You will then see the Protocol Workspace screen:

To reopen the protocol from the Protocol Workspace, select the “Edit Protocol” button:
Logout and complete the protocol at another time
You can take a break from filling out the protocol at any time. Log back into ARROW, select the
“Biosafety” tab, and click on the name of the protocol to get back to the protocol you started:

Have another lab member work on the protocol
If you wish to have a lab manager or other member of your lab work on an existing protocol, the
individual must be listed as read/write personnel in section II. When read/write personnel log onto
ARROW using their NetID and password, they will see this screen:
To access the protocol, select the “Biosafety” tab and click on the name of the protocol:

Submit the protocol:
On the last page of the protocol (PI Signature page), you will need to follow the directions in the yellow
box to submit your protocol. Only the PI can fill out the assurances page, sign, and submit the protocol.
If you have submitted the protocol correctly, the status of the protocol should be “OBS Assignment” and
there should be an activity listed in the “History” tab:
