Build-A-Beetle Project
Objective: Construct a “super beetle” that
would be the best possible decomposer
Think about the characteristics of decomposers that aid in the breakdown of organisms.
Your super beetle should incorporate elements of decomposers from the text and what
you’ve learned in class. You will be graded on creativity, neatness, labels, description, and
Nature’s Recyclers knowledge. You will create a 3-D model and write a description in
paragraph form on a piece of lined paper or typed.
Guidelines:
1. The beetle must be between 6-12 inches long and sturdy.
2. The insect must have accurate and appropriate proportions, true color and
form, etc.
3. The beetle must include at least five features that aid in decomposition.
4. A written description must accompany your model and include:
a. The name of your beetle
b. A complete description of the beetle’s characteristics
i. What does the beetle decompose?
ii. How are the parts of the body used in decomposition?
In preparation to build your model, you should collect the materials
that you will need for construction. These materials can be found
around your house, outside, at a store, etc.
