Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
On Monday, January 31, we will begin to celebrate National
Catholic Schools Week. This is a week when we give thanks
for the many opportunities available to us because of the
religious nature of our school. We have the option of beginning each day with either a Mass or a Communion Service. We
can begin each day with prayer and with a pledge to the flag of our country. Prayer and religious teachings can easily be
incorporated in our classrooms, and moral teachings are able to include Bible passages or Christian
teachings. At Cathedral, one of our big calls is for diversity, so we work towards this noble goal
through our Christian approach.
As a Catholic school, much of our support comes from committed alumni who reach out
generously to help fund some of our programs or to underwrite partial tuition for some of our
students. We are gifted with many religious priests, brothers, and sisters who have taught
here over our 91 year history. We begin each day with Mass or a Communion Service in our
Chapel. You are invited to join us at 7:00 a.m. any morning that is convenient for you, or to come to any all-school Mass
(9:30 – 11:00 a.m.) that is announced.
I would like to offer you a personal invitation to join us, if possible, for our National Catholic Schools’ Week AllSchool Liturgy on Tuesday, February 1st from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. in the Robert V. Welch Student Activity Center.
Thank you, Loving Creator, for allowing us to attend and work at a Catholic school!

These Right to Life remarks were given by Mrs. Margaret Stempky, one of our Cathedral parents, at her parish last
Sunday. This is definitely worth reading!
In Proverbs 31:8 it says, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those
who are perishing.”
My name is Margaret Stempky and I am the leader of our Pro Life Ministry here at St. Matthew.
When I found this verse I really felt like it explained the mission of our ministry.
I am here today because this weekend, our nation is remembering the US Supreme Court decision which
legalized abortion 38 years ago. Since this decision, over 55 million Americans, who could not speak for
themselves, have lost their lives. It is easy to become numb to these kinds of numbers and forget what it is doing to
our country.
In 1994 Mother Teresa came to the United States and commented on this Supreme Court decision. She
said, “America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a
great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women
against men. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts ~ a child ~ as a competitor, an intrusion, and an
inconvenience.”
I simply ask you to take a moment this weekend and pray for an end to
abortion. Pray for the unborn, for their mothers and fathers, for the sidewalk
counselors, the lawmakers and for all us. I ask you to listen to hear what God might
be calling you to do.
Last week, in the bulletin, there was a flyer about the Pro Life rally which will be held downtown on Monday.
Anyone available is encouraged to attend. The Pro Life Ministry has a table set up in the back of church if you have
any questions or just want grab a pamphlet please feel free to stop by. As with all the ministries, we are always
looking for more volunteers.
9
I would like to close with this simple prayer:
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much and I ask you to spare the life of the unborn child I have spiritually
adopted who is in danger of abortion. Amen

The Spanish Competition Team is starting to form for this year’s competition on
Saturday, April 16, to be held right here at Cathedral for the first time ever! Last year’s
Spanish III team took first place in the state! We are looking to repeat that victory and bring
home victories in the other levels, including the Heritage Speaker category for students who
speak Spanish in the home. All participants must be currently enrolled in a Spanish class.
There is a wide variety of categories, including posters/piñatas; tests for vocabulary, grammar
and scrambled sentences; speaking events; skits; Toro Trivia (conducted in English!); and
new this year: Latin dance and a vocal category! Please see this link for the student survey http://www.cathedralirish.org/file.cfm?resourceid=10102&filename=concurso%20survey%202011%2Edoc or email Mrs. Rose Egan
(regan@cathedral-irish.org) if you have any questions about how your student can participate. ¡¡Viva el equipo de español!

The Purdue Student Engineering Foundation (PSEF) holds an event called Engineering Expo, which is a hands-on,
head-first dive into the world of engineering. Students participating will have the opportunity to explore their
potential in engineering.
 The events include an academic fair in which students can gain insight into various engineering disciplines and
student engineering organizations at Purdue, a quiz bowl where students show off their knowledge, and an
impromptu competition. In this competition students will use math, physics, and engineering principles to solve a
given task with limited time and resources. The results of the quiz bowl and impromptu competition will determine
winners eligible for a total of $3,000 in scholarships.
 The date for Engineering Expo is April 6th, 2011 and will take place in the Purdue Memorial Union; however
students must be registered for the event before February 15th. Registration is $12 per student,
which includes lunch and a Engineering Expo gift. Forms can be found on our website,
psef.purdue.org/expo/. Our website also contains useful dates and information about PSEF as
well as Engineering Expo.
Do not hesitate to contact me through email with any questions or concerns. My email addresses
are szee@purdue.edu or expo@psef.purdue.org.

Dear Parents,
On February 14th we will be beginning a program for young women called “ENDOW: Educating on the
Nature and Dignity of Women”. This is a study group that meets once a week for 8 weeks and is open to any female
student. The purpose of this program is to inspire young women with the possibilities of their womanhood, encourage
women to embrace their God-given spiritual and physical gifts, challenge women in service to their families,
community, and church and to support women as they bring their gifts and talents in to the plan that God has laid
for them. Study groups will be led by trained faculty and staff members and we will be using Pope John Paul II’s
encyclical called Letter to Women as well as scripture as part of our study program. If you are interested in
learning more about this program or getting your student involved please contact Charlene Witka
(cwitka@cathedral-irish.org) or Sarah Erotas (serotas@cathedral-irish.org).

Who wants to earn a big scholarship? If you will not be 19 before Jan. 1, 2011, you are eligible to compete in the
Optimist International speech Contest in late January or mid-February. See Mrs. Scheetz if you are
interested and to get a Registration form. You will need to write a 4-5 minute speech on the
subject: “If I were a leader of the free world, the first issue I would address would be…!”
Think about this; collect your thoughts and see Mrs. Scheetz for more information, help and registration
forms.
***The Optimist club has for the 1st time opened this up to all students not yet 19! Mrs. Scheetz is in Rm.
#3302.
Reminder: It states in the Blue Book that students need to be called in by 9:30 am.
Parents/Guardians should be aware that if they are calling after 9:30 a.m., they must speak to an
actual person to insure that their student’s attendance record is accurately updated and they
should especially speak to a live person if they are calling after 9:30 a.m. to request an early
dismissal. Many freshman students are telling their parents to just come in to the front office and we
will call them out of class. This is disruptive to the classroom and it is not the way we do this at Cathedral.

Cathedral will offer two SAT prep classes 2nd semester. The first has already begun to prepare students for the

provide all practice materials. Registration has begun January 10th. Please email lobrien@cathedral-irish.org if you have

Service Outreach News:
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
As January winds to a close, we have the following inspirational service opportunities for our Cathedral students:
Class Service Projects “Say to Wisdom, ‘You are my sister’; call Understanding, ‘Friend!’” Prov 7:4. Our service at
Cathedral helps us to grow in understanding and in contemplation. As January bids its snowy adieu, the remaining
Cathedral initiated events for this month include a drive for the refugee center at Catholic Charities from Jan 26-Feb 2, led
by Refugee Council Ambassadors Katy Hoeper and Liz Subrin. Another vibrant group will travel to Camp Atterbury on
Saturday evening, Jan 29 to support the soldiers before their deployment to Afghanistan. In February, our freshman will be
helping at the Christmas Store to prepare for next year on Thursday, Feb 10. On Saturday, Feb 12, our juniors will prepare
and serve a tasty lunch at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen. Join our service leadership workshop on February 19 as Cathedral
alums join us to share their life experiences in serving community needs. We invite students and parents to save the date of
Feb 26 to help at University of Indianapolis in our MAKE IT MINE IPS outreach. Details on all of these on-going class
service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities as wonderful expressions of our ability to gather at the table with
our brothers and sisters.
Grant Workshop: Any students interested in attending a grant writing workshop for Youth As Resources Grants, please
join us on Thursday, Jan 26 after school. We will leave at 3:30 to attend the United Way grant writing session. Simply let
Mrs. Halstead know of your interest via email at chalstead@cathedral-irish.org.
S.A.I.L (Students Active in Initiative and Leadership) Workshop Students are invited to a leadership workshop on
Saturday, Feb 19 from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM at Cathedral in the SLC. The fee for this workshop is $25. The morning
session will be guided by the leadership experiences of four noteworthy Cathedral alumni, who are actively engaged in not
for profit agencies in the Indianapolis community. The afternoon session will include break-out sessions to focus upon the
work and worth of these agencies in our Indianapolis community. Our students will have an opportunity to direct how the
collective donation of $10 per person (part of the workshop fee of $25) will be used by the agency to further its community
work. We will close the session with a zumba and ukulele lesson. If needed, scholarship may be applied for the workshop
fee. See registration form and flyer for details. Four service hours may be earned. Any questions, please contact Cheri
Halstead, email chalstead@cathedral-irish.org or 968 7317.

“Make It Mine” Service Outreach Cathedral students will lead another wonderful day of engagement for IPS middle
school students on Saturday, February 26 at the University of Indianapolis. Cathedral artists, musicians, athletes, scholars
and dancers will lead six activity centers regarding music, art, athletics, reading, writing, and art. The theme of the day is
MAKE IT MINE. More than 150 Cathedral students will be needed to be reading buddies during the next year and to
encourage the reading of EIGHT books. Our next MAKE IT MINE event will take place at University of Indianapolis on
Saturday, February 26. Reserve this date now in your calendar to help out on this special day. We performed a smaller
Make It Mine event on December 4 at IPS 106. Mrs. Foster, the school principal, shares that the rest of her fifth and sixth
grade students cannot wait until our February 26 event at the University of Indianapolis. Click here for the sign up form.
Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School and are current for all
hours received since the start of school. There is a small button in the upper right hand corner to view the
service hours. For the 2010-11academic year, service hours for seniors were due December 1, 2010 to
meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2010-11, freshmen, sophomore and junior
hours are due March 1, 2011. The status of service hours for these underclassmen will be shown as
satisfactory or unsatisfactory on the third quarter report card. If the hours for last year were completed,
hours earned after April 23, 2010 may be credited to the current year’s requirement. We are accepting
service on a project basis as well. After Sep 1, hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the
date of service performance.

Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each month.
The balance of 2010 and 2011 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community needs.
Service Reflection
They say it takes a minute to serve a special person,
An hour to appreciate them,
A day to love them,
But then an entire life to forget them.
May your Cathedral service personally enrich you and your spirituality, as we seek to
address challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in our immediate community and world-wide.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 20010-11 are due on March 1,
2011. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2010-2011 were due on December 1, 2010. Click here for
the 2010-11 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2009-10 Service Documentation form. Click here for the
Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.
Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not
accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not
accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

Are you a good classmate and teammate? Do you help others when they are down, or do you bring them down
even more?
 The positive and productive student-athlete is there for their classmates and teammates when things get difficult
and in time of need. When companions make mistakes and may not be performing up to their capabilities, pick
them up with positive comments and support.
 We all have bad days in school and in our favorite sports. Don't let those days and memories linger. Help others
move on to the next challenge ahead.

Meditation:
Meditation: 2 Timothy 1:1-8
Stir into flame the gift of God that you have. (2 Timothy 1:6)
Today we celebrate Sts. Timothy and Titus, two of our first bishops. And on this day, one truth shines out: No matter how
the role of bishops has changed over the centuries, their mission remains the same—to encourage believers to press on
and keep growing in their faith. Bishops are called by God to dedicate their lives to helping all their people reach their fullest
potential in Christ.
Most of us aren’t bishops, but we are all in a network of relationships with other people whose lives we can touch and
influence: children and grandchildren, friends, co-workers, neighbors, fellow parishioners. In all of these relationships, we
can take an interest in people’s spiritual lives and encourage them to fan into flame the wonderful gifts that God has given
them. So let’s look at Paul’s relationship to Timothy to find out how we can become agents of encouragement and
inspiration.
It’s obvious that Paul was personally involved in Timothy’s life. It was from this position of friendship and mutual love that
Paul was able to recognize Timothy’s gifts and encourage him to use them. His friendship with Timothy also gave Paul the
freedom to help him set the unshakable truths of the gospel as the foundation for his life.
This is a model for us as well. Even when we are busy with other demands, we can still learn how to pay attention to the
people around us, connecting with them and learning about their hopes and fears, their joys and challenges. We can look
for the gifts that other people have and encourage them to use these gifts to build up God’s people. And we can take
opportunities to encourage our friends when their faith is wavering. We don’t have to be bishops or pastors to make a
difference in the church. We can all encourage each other and build each other up, fanning the flame in each other’s lives
until the whole church is burning with passion for the Lord!
“Lord, help me to see the people in my life with your eyes. Teach me how to be an agent of encouragement and hope in
you.”
Blessings,
