Slaters 1864 Trade Directory Coxhoe is a township in the parish of Kelloe and southern division of Easington situated 5 ½ miles SE by S from Durham. Coal to a considerable extent is obtained in the neighbourhood, there are also lime quarries, and a seam of excellent clay used for brick-making. With those exceptions the trade of the place is principally of a domestic nature. The Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists have chapels in the village. Blackgate is a continuation of Coxhoe Village. Population of the parish of Kelloe in 1861, 12,867 and of Coxhoe 4,171 of that number. Post Office Timothy Cooper, Post master- letters from all parts arrive (from Ferryhill) at half past seven in the morning and are dispatched at quarter before seven in the evening.
