Eligibility
UM student: Eligible up to 20 hours/week during school or 40 hours during
school breaks. This includes employment elsewhere on campus.
F-1
Full-time student
Non-UM student: Need authorization to volunteer at Umich - Usually in the
form of Curricular Practical Training.
F-2
Dependent of F-1 full-time student
Defined volunteer placement only; not lab
Can volunteer for defined volunteer placement.
For lab volunteering:
J-1 student at UM: needs authorization from J-1 advisor to work or
volunteer on campus. Hours per week limited like F-1.
J-1
Exchange visitor who could be full-time
student
J-1 student not at UM: unlikely to see many of these. Will need
authorization call Academic Training to engage in activities off of their
home campus. This will be on the DS-2019 and in a letter.
J-1 non-student (short term scholar, research scholar, professor, specialist,
etc): is here for a specifically defined program and should not be
volunteering outside of that program unless authorized by their J-1
sponsor.
J-2

If no EAD, defined volunteer placement only; not lab
Can volunteer in hospital defined volunteer placement.
