Summary of the University of Salford’s Equality and Diversity Statistics Students Produced in accordance with the Public Duty Reporting Guidelines RQ/Student Data 2012-13 Page 1 Introduction This report summarises the University’s position in the academic year 2012/13. It has not been possible to report against all the protected characteristics, namely Religion and Sexual Orientation, as the process for collation of these are being finalised.. However, further work is being undertaken this year to engage staff and students to collect and collate this information as far as it is practicable. All of the graphs have comparison data illustrated to enable us to show the trends over time. Background The overall aim of the Equality Act (2010) Public Sector Equality Duty is to make sure that public bodies take into account as part of their decision making process. Therefore the University needs to demonstrate how it advances equality by: Removing or minimising disadvantages suffered by anyone with a protected characteristic Taking steps to meet the needs of people who share a protected characteristic that is different from those who do not have it Encouraging people with a protected characteristic to participate in public life or other activities where their participation is low General Duty The three aims of the General Duty are to: Eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act Advance equality of opportunity between those who share a protected characteristic and those who do not Foster good relations between those who share a protected characteristic and those who do not by tackling prejudice and promoting understanding In 2011 the University, alongside all public organisations, was required to publish information to persons who share a relevant protected characteristic who are: Its employees (if over 150 staff) Other persons affected by its policies and practices (our students) Protected Characteristics Age Disability Gender Reassignment Marriage and Civil Partnership Pregnancy and Maternity RQ/Student Data 2012-13 Page 2 Race Sex Sexual Orientation For more information on the protected characteristics please visit: http://www.ecu.ac.uk/law/equalityact Sources of information The information presented in this report is taken from several sources: Student information System (for student related graphs) Human Resources System (for staff related graphs) Committee constitution and membership (for Senate) Mandatory external reporting such as Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA)and Destination of leavers in Higher Education (DLHE) submissions for the 12/13 Academic year.
