At the age of 7, Henry and his family, including his brother, John, immigrated to Australia. The family lived in Chinchilla, Queensland. Private Henry Saltmer embarked on HMAT Clan McGillivray in Brisbane and was destined for the Western Front. He was 38 and was leaving behind a wife and five children; however William, his brother and cousin, would make the long and courageous journey with him. One year later, on 2 March 1917 Henry Saltmer was fatally wounded in action in France. His cousin William, was also wounded, however it is unknown if they fought in the same battle that took Henry’s life. Henry is now buried in the Warlencourt British cemetery in France. For Henry’s brave efforts to fight for his country he was awarded with the British War Medal and the Victory Medal and these are now kept by his distant family. Like so many Australian men, Henry Saltmer left his family to fight for his country and we are forever indebted to him and his fallen comrades for their bravery and selfless sacrifice.
