2nd Annual Breck Scaffold - Run For Mandi 5K charity run/walk
On September 22nd, 2013, we will be hosting the 2nd annual 5 KM Charity Run for the Mandi Schwartz
Memorial Bursary and the Mandi Schwartz Foundation. Mandi was an incredible young woman who
touched the lives of many during her life and her struggle with cancer. In the inaugural “Run for Mandi”
we had over 300 participants and raised over $34,000 that went towards the Mandi Schwartz Memorial
Bursary as well as the Mandi Schwartz Foundation.
ANDI SCHWARTZ MEMORIAL BURSARY
Mandi Schwartz, from Wilcox, Saskatchewan, passed away at the
age of 23 after a two year battle with Leukemia. Product of
Notre Dame, Schwartz was attending Yale University where she
played with the Bulldogs woman's hockey team, while also
participating in Canadian Women's National Team camps.
During her third year at Yale, Schwartz was diagnosed with acute
myeloid leukemia, which is an aggressive form of blood and
bone marrow cancer. She was in desperate need of a stem cell
transplant, which instigated a massive on-line campaign to find
both bone marrow matches and umbilical cord blood from
women about to give birth. The Facebook page "Become
Mandi's Hero" has drawn almost 6,500 followers.
Donors were found, but Schwartz's transplant scheduled for
August 26 was delayed when it was discovered the cancer had
again returned. She underwent further chemotherapy
treatments in Seattle before stem cells from two umbilical-cord donors were transplanted on
September 20.
In late December tests revealed the devastating news that her cancer had returned. The treatment
they'd hoped to continue in Saskatchewan was no longer possible.
Her parents Rick and Carol, brothers Jaden and Rylan, and fiancé Kaylem Prefontaine (Rockglen,
Saskatchewan) fought alongside Mandi as she struggled for survival. A message posted on Sunday, April
3 read: "Thank you for your support. We regret to inform you that Mandi passed this morning at 10:35
PST surrounded by her wonderful family, fiancé and friends."
The Mandi Schwartz Memorial Bursary was created in Mandi's honour to offer financial assistance to
future Notre Dame Hounds. Her journey inspired many - the hockey community was moved by her
determination, the local community was moved by her heart.
