General comments from adjudicator David Griffiths
The number of applicants was a very encouraging sign. Choral music is such a rich and growing sound world for
folk to get involved with and for young composers a great way to be able to hear their pieces first hand in school
choirs. The standard of entries was high with some exceptional examples of exquisite word setting and imaginative
choral writing. What I looked for was a consistency of style, accuracy of notation, a keen harmonic understanding,
strong thematic ideas, appropriate setting of words and overall construction of the composition. While some of the
pieces demonstrated deep feeling and sincerity, these were affected occasionally by notation errors, awkward word
setting and problems with part writing that detracted from the intent of the music.
My congratulations to the winners and all competitors on their efforts.
